Foreign Minister K Shanmugam gave his first comments on allegations that Singapore had spied on its neighbours, saying at The Straits Times' Global Forum on Friday that "the Indonesians and Malaysians know that we won't do anything to harm their interests".

He said that on intelligence matters, the Singapore Government will not confirm or deny any specific reports even if they are untrue, because the ensuing back-and-forth would be "never-ending".

"You cannot say, this is 5 per cent true or 95 per cent true, that we work with the Americans and Australians on this aspect of counter-terrorism but not this aspect. Never-ending. The point is that the Indonesians and Malaysians know that we won't do anything to harm their interests," he said.

Asked by moderator, ST editor Warren Fernandez, if the allegations that were published in an Australian newspaper this week would harm Singapore's bilateral ties with Indonesia and Malaysia, Mr Shanmugam said that it should not, as "what we do is known to all of us." The pressure of domestic politicking around the allegations would be stronger in Malaysia and Indonesia, but "that is not new and we just have to deal with it", he added,

If you all don't understand the sensitivity of it all - the delicate geo-political situation Singapore is in - please do not make any assumptions.

Singapore is always exercising great care, great caution and great diplomacy as far as our relationship with our neighbours are concerned. We are a small dot. We are surrounded. We are in a tight spot - in a corner.

So it is sheer foolishness if we offend our big brothers. Political diplomacy and sensitivity is the only way for Singapore to adopt and to ensure our survival in a very potentially explosive and tumultuous geo-political region.

If you guys are so brave and so full of guts, I challenge you to go to the embassies and protest. It is easy to spout bravery and bravo behind your PC and hide under your sarongs. But when you see the eye of the tiger and the barrel of the rifle pointing at you, your balls will drop .Talking is easy but walking the talk is something else.

Do not flame the fire - it can explode with disastrous consequences. Please be careful. And you Quitters ,stop indulging in flame wars!!!

I sincerely believe our Minister did the right thing and said the right thing - for the good of our neighbours and also for the good of Singapore. Majulah Singapura!!!

Unlike SARS and HAZE, nobody, nobody, nobody will stand up and help PAP on spy issue and website hacking issues because citizens are not stupid and they know this shit is created by PAP due to its own incompetency and it is not a national issue.
