After a quarter of century and the destruction of numerous families, damages to homes ranging from vandalism, arson and criminal mischief (padlocking gates) threat to family members, innocent parties, the use of kids to carry out vandalism, corruption of police officers up to senior ranks and the ubiquitous presence of Ah Long in all nook and cranny, the govt has finally realised that it falls under organised secret society activity.

New laws will include
- fines ranging from $30K to $500K
- detention without trial (Sec 55 for the Ah Bengs, CLTP for the rest)
- Caning
- seizure of assets including property

Additional measures include
- inspection of bank accounts
- punishment for providing pre-paid SIM cards to accomplices
- punishment for threathening families of debtors
- enhanced punishment for using kids under 16
- immunity for those who testify against their accomplices
- power to examine tax records of the whole fucking family of Ah Long
- debtor to face charges including jail if false address is provided to Ah Long that causes innocent homeowners to be target of attacks.

Good luck to anyone who has been illegally loaning money or investing in a scheme without realising that it is for Ah Long Business.

Need something like the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) of the USA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RICO
Hit where it hurts the most, i.e. their freedoms and pockets. Prepare to use one of the islands as a Pulau Jerejak.

Mere fines are peanuts to an enterprise than thrives on deal in exponential interests taking. Get the bosses instead of foot soldiers as the organisation cannot survive without directions from the hierachy above. Get their accountants and stop their money flow and the entity will be deprived of its nourishment and die.

Looks like you didn't read the post. More powerful than RICO. Detention without trial, going after their families, their houses , their assets, access to tax information of the entire family, mandatory caning imprisonment.

Seemed like an overkill with all those draconion measures. What I meant was, speaks softly but carries a big stick. Detention without trial and going after their family is so archaic and a yoke that we can do without. It is open to abuse by the powers that be and whoever wields the power will be king. Try them in the open court with full transparency and put them to sleep if found guilty for all I care but detention without trial on a whiff of suspicion is just too much. ISA is bad as is, we do not need any more tools for the government to suppress the people and make this place into a police state.

Open court trial and consfication of ill-gotten gains seemed more appropriate than to go after family members who could well be innocent and just being unlucky enough to carry the same surname.

First you wanted more power now you want to backtrack. Might want to read your first post with the Pulau in it.

When and how did I backtracked ? I just disagreed with that detention without trial and the family thingy. Investigating and convicting them in a proper court with full transparency is the only way to go.

Section 55 has been around for as long as I've lived. It was a very powerful tool against the triads and gangsters in the 50s-70s. It practically gives the police a free hand and the Minister his pleasure. Why did it take the govt so long to recognise the problem and to use simple bt effective tools like Sect 55 to deal with these intimidation, unruly and unlawful behaviour? Shall we gve 3 Hail Marys to PAP?

This crime affects the common in the street but not those staying in good class bungalows. That probabaly explains why they could not be bothered. Elections are near and grassroots complained.

It reared its ugly head in the mid 80s with a wave of splashed paint, threats painted on doors and lifts. It even led to wholesale corruption in the Police force with at least one ASP sent to prison. The only consolation was Ah Long San refused to implicate other public servants.

The entire Moneylenders Act was actually replaced with a new set only a year ago in Dec 08 It did not work. First time that I have seen substantial parts of new law being replaced within a year.

By the way, Sec 55 was introduced by the British and it is faithfully renewed by parliament every 5 years.
