Malaysian Bar moots Ambiga for AG

The Malaysian Bar has given its support for former president Ambiga Sreenevasan to be appointed as the new attorney-general.

Bar president George Varughese said that Ambiga would be a perfect candidate for the position, given that she is not a politician which would thus ensure the independence of the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

"If Ambiga is appointed as the new AG, she would ensure that the chambers would be free from political influences and interference," he told Malaysiakini.

Varughese also stated that the new AG should be of impeccable character, to be able to give sound advice to prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

What is of equal importance, he stressed, is that the AG should be against race, religion and gender-based politics.

"To this, Ambiga meets this criteria. Hence, she enjoys the confidence and support of the Malaysian Bar should she be chosen for the post," he said.

Besides leading the Bar, Ambiga had also served as the chairperson of electoral reform group Bersih.

In a statement yesterday, Varughese said that it is crucial to separate the AGC from the office of the public prosecutor.

"The removal of the public prosecutorial role from the attorney-general is a necessary step to strengthen the independence of public prosecutors, and to promote public confidence in the office of the director of public prosecution.

“The prospect or appearance of bias would be removed," he had said.

Although Mahathir indicated last week that the new administration does not have an AG at present, Mohamed Apandi Ali was reported to have clocked in for work as normal this morning.

Despite his denials, Apandi remains in the prime minister's crosshairs, as he believes the former concealed evidence regarding the 1MDB scandal.

Ambiga, when met after a court case, said she did not want to comment on the Malaysian Bar's suggestion adding she would prefer to let due process take its path.

Probe nation's 'biggest thief' who resides in S'wak – NGO urges Dr M

A Sarawak-based NGO has urged Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to investigate a person whom it described as the nation's “biggest thief.”

Without mentioning names, Movement of Change Sarawak (MoCS) leader Francis Siah said this person resided in the hornbill state.

“A certain individual in Sarawak who was reportedly worth a staggering RM45 billion, according to a 2012 report by the Swiss-based group, Bruno Manser Fonds (BMF), is a Sarawakian,” he added.

Siah claimed if the sum amassed by this person's family and state ministers were taken into account, the figure would be a staggering RM64 billion.

“This is wealth derived from plundering the state over three decades,” he told Malaysiakini.

According to Siah, the individual concerned is easily the richest man in Malaysia, having well surpassed the hard-earned fortunes of tycoon Robert Kuok.

'Could have stolen more than Najib'

“If the prime minister and the Pakatan Harapan government are going after Najib Abdul Razak for his allegedly stolen wealth, then this individual from Sarawak must be thoroughly investigated too.

“He could easily have stolen much more from the state over 30 long years than Najib. The biggest Malaysian thief is actually in Sarawak. This is our message to the prime minister,” he added.

Siah said, as the Harapan government embarks on its anti-corruption drive, MoCS is also urging the prime minister to look into the decades of corrupt practices in Sarawak perpetuated by BN leaders.

“This blatant abuse of power has caused untold suffering to Sarawakians,” he added.

He said MoCS also expressed its support to the prime minister’s initiative to replace the top brass in the MACC as the first step to curb corruption.

“It’s heartening to learn that the chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad has resigned today. All his deadwood cohorts must also go,” he added.

Siah said the prime minister must promise Sarawakians that all the “thieves, daylight robbers and those who were not probed for their alleged thieving” must never be allowed to go unpunished.

For the record, MoCS had lodged reports against the former Sararak chief minister and current governor Abdul Taib Mahmud with the police and MACC, both in Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur.

The movement had also petitioned the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong not to appoint Taib as governor.

PM: Gov't can have a case against Najib 'in a short while'
15 May 2018, 3:44 pm (Updated 15 May 2018, 4:36 pm)

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad believes his government would have a case against his predecessor Najib Abdul Razak “in a short while”.

He also said whether Najib would serve time in prison depends on the results of an investigation.

"If there is no case, we don't go for detention without trial," he was quoted as saying by Reuters...

Mad Hatter harassing former PM Najib. Typical of oppies to harass their political rivals after winning elections.

KUALA LUMPUR — The long police search of former prime minister Najib Razak's residence in Kuala Lumpur has caused mental distress and anguish to the family and constitutes harassment, said his lawyer.

Datuk Harpal Singh Grewal, the lawyer of Datuk Seri Najib, said the distress to the family had been exacerbated by efforts by the police to drill into a safe that had not been opened for 20 years, causing the family to have no peace and quiet.

The presence of 50 to 60 policemen on the premises also interfered with the family's Ramadan fast, as well as their sahur, a pre-dawn meal consumed by Muslims before fasting starts.

Describing what happened on Wednesday night in a statement that Mr Najib instructed him to release, Mr Harpal said when he arrived at the house he was told the reason for the raid, of which he duly informed his client.

manner "save and except for the events after 5am".

He said several boxes containing personal items, which had been brought from the prime minister's official residence after Mr Najib vacated it, were opened. These items were then packed into several boxes.

"Although the police team said they would be leaving after packing the last box, there were still a number of police personnel outside the residence and remained there till the early hours of the morning. At about 8.30am, some of the (police) proceeded to a room located on the first floor and decided to drill open a safe which had remained locked for two decades as the key had been misplaced."

As of 7pm, the drilling was still going on and "there is absolutely no peace and quiet" in the house, said Mr Harpal.

"The search conducted in the premises and the items seized this far would seem of insignificant value and the continued presence of policemen in his residence and the drilling of the old safe strongly suggests unwarranted harassment of Datuk Seri Najib's family members, staff and others mental distress and anguish.

"More importantly, the raid was conducted on the eve of the holy month of Ramadan and Datuk Seri Najib's family and staff were denied the right to properly conduct their religious obligations prior to the opening of fast on the first day of Ramadan.

m&d police continues to humiliate Najib by demanding free food and chocolates. Fucking oppies abuse of power when they take over!

FMT-hermes-najib-rosmah4.jpg

PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Najib Razak today hit out at police personnel who demanded that meals be prepared for them when they raided his children’s homes.

In a statement issued by his lawyer today, Najib also criticised the “cavalier and irresponsible” manner in which the raid was conducted.

“This is reflected by the manner in which police personnel helped themselves to food and chocolates in the refrigerator,” he said, adding the widespread publicity surrounding the seizure of other belongings has embarrassed and humiliated his family.
