SINGAPORE - While recovering from the flu, a man was resting on a couch in his living room when a tree branch smashed through the windows, showering him in glass.

Even though the sofa was next to the windows and glass landed on his face, the man, who wanted to be known only as Mr Irfan, was uninjured.

The incident happened on July 31 at around 9.30am, when workers from Golden Landscaping were removing a tree next to Block 259 Yishun Street 22.

Nee Soon GRC MP Jackson Lam said two units were damaged.

Mr Irfan, 43, a workplace safety and health trainer, and home owner of the affected unit on the second floor, said: “It was very loud, and it felt like the whole structure was going to collapse.”

His wife, who wanted to be known only as Madam Salfarina, 41, and who was working in the next room, was also not injured.

Madam Salfarina, an executive at a healthcare insurance company, said she heard a loud bang, and the home shook.

Mr Irfan said he temporarily could not hear after the impact.

He said: “I had to call my son to check my face (to see if I was bleeding).”

When The Straits Times arrived at 2pm, there were cracks on the living room walls, and the window grilles were bent out of shape.

The couple said they were grateful that their two younger children, aged eight and one, were not home when the incident happened.

Their eldest child, a 22-year-old son, was sleeping in his room at the time.

Mr Lam visited the family at around 2pm. He assured them the landscaping company would pay for the damage, and the town council would facilitate the process.

Mr Irfan said he temporarily could not hear after the impact.

He said in a statement that the tree had spot decay, weakening its structure.

The ongoing works to remove the tree aggravated its condition, leading to a tree branch falling and damaging two HDB units. No one was hurt.

He said the town council had been activated to clear the debris and assess the impact of the damage. Another team was working on removal of the tree for safety reasons.

Mr Lam said: “I spoke with the (Nee Soon) Town Council’s horticulture team, and understand that necessary safety precaution was taken before the removal of the tree.

“Notices were put up, the area was cordoned off, nearby structures were removed where needed, and visual checks were done before work began.”

He said the town council is helping the affected families.

A 20m-tall tree near a playground fell and landed on a private residence at Sixth Avenue on April 21 at 6.35pm.

Sharing photos of the tree toppled over an outdoor exercise area, the Stomper said the tree was completely uprooted.

"This was previously a construction site. The roots look too shallow and they may or may not have been damaged by the construction."

No one was injured, but the tree damaged her fences and roof. The Stomper estimated the cost of repairs to be at least $5,000.

She said: "The hedge beside my house is half gone, my fence is broken and part of my roof tiles have cracked."

The playground was previously under renovation since January and was opened to the public at the end of March.

"The roots of the tree look disproportionately smaller and residents remember the roots of the tree eating into the playground floor," said the Stomper.

"I initially thought it was an act of god, but when I saw the root systems, I thought it was so strange that such a big tree would have such shallow roots when the neighbouring two are sprawled all over.

"It is suspected that the playground contractor might have evened out the floor and removed the roots, causing structural instability to the tree."

The tree has since been removed by National Parks Board and the police told her a loss adjuster will be in contact with her soon, said the Stomper.

"I have two young girls aged four and two. If my child or pet were playing in the front garden, they wouldn't have survived the impact.

"Only when you see the damage and realise it could be your child's head or your dog's body, the negligence becomes very obvious."

Numerous trees fell by the road near Block 990A Jurong West Street 93.

Stomper Tom spotted the fallen trees on May 4 at 8am.

According to him, no landscaping activity was happening at the time.

"My view is wear and tear, but I think the top was very heavy, and the trunks were very old, so they collapsed," he said.

"There are also a few trees around that look like they are going to collapse soon."

Tom said cleaners had moved the fallen trees aside.

"As a member of the public, I told them to move it to one side. They don't need to pull the trunks and hurt themselves.

"That day was a Sunday, so there was not much movement and cars," he remarked.

"On normal days, it would be dangerous, as beside the block there is a 24-hour prata shop.

"I just tried to do my part as a former Pioneer Zone 3 residents' committee member."

Totally irrelevant to the matter but that turd had to mention that part to the media. Must have been a source of immense pride for him. :roflmao:

SINGAPORE – Two people were taken to hospital after they were hit by a falling tree while travelling in bad weather on the SLE on the night of Oct 24.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a road traffic accident on the SLE towards CTE, before the Lentor Avenue Exit, at about 10.10pm that day.

Two people were taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, SCDF said.

National water agency PUB had issued an alert at 9.21pm on Oct 24, warning people to expect heavy rain over many areas of Singapore from 9.45pm to 11.15pm.

Dashcam footage posted on Facebook shows three motorcycles travelling on the right-most lane of an expressway in the rain.

A tree in the central divider then falls onto the right-most lane.

A motorcyclist appears to be hit by the tree, bumps into the central divider, but regains control afterwards.

Another motorcyclist, however, is hit by the falling tree and falls off the motorcycle after losing control of the vehicle.

Sparks can also be seen coming from the motorcycle.

Separately, Shin Min Daily News reported on Oct 25 that the trunk of a large tree in Jalan Besar broke and fell, almost hitting several nearby cyclists.

The Chinese-language daily reported that the incident had happened at about 10pm on Oct 24.

Quoting an eyewitness, the report stated that it was raining in the area at the time of the incident.

The weatherman had earlier said that Sumatra squalls might bring widespread thundery showers and gusty winds in the pre-dawn hours and mornings on some days for the rest of October.

The car’s roof was crumpled and its front bumper was partially ripped off. Some parts of the branch were also lodged in the left side of the front bumper.
