Hawkers prices is not really very cheap.
Nowadays you are set back almost $8 for a simple meal.

It is like when I tell Canadians how much a small condo in Singapore costs they dont believe. How much a Corolla costs. They cannot believe.

So sinkies can accept paying'$100k for Toyota Corolla. Can accept paying millions for shoe box condo. Can accept pay thousands to go on holiday.

But pay $8 for a meal is too expensive?

A bowl of pho where I am is about CAD$12-13. Plate of Phad Thai is also same. And the rental here is lower. Labour costs higher.

Yes.
I also told them you can have a live in maid do all housework for you, cook, wash car, wash clothes, iron clothes, look after children and old folks for less than $1000 a month.
They very impressed.
But Singaporeans will complain maid also getting expensive.

I've no complaints about my maids. In our hot weather, they appreciate the balinese work attire that they are required to wear while doing their maid duties.

There is different group of people everywhere. I don't think bmw or merc car owner or landed property owner will fight over a $8 meal at hawker centre. In fact they may have dinner at restaurant or home cook meal maid.

For those take home net income less then Sgd2k . Then $8 every meals is different situation

If cannot afford then pack sandwiches. Pack leftovers for lunch. Cook own dinner. Fried rice.

Eating out or ordering takr out is a luxury not a necessity.
