A former PRC associate professor of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was cleared of molesting a 22 year old PRC student after he compounded the offence for $5,000.
41 year old Li Jinyan was charged with touching the buttocks of the PRC student at NTU last year. The student who was in court yesterday, accepted Li’s “compensation” for outraging her modesty.
Li graduated with a Bachelor of Sciene in Mathematics from a Changsha university in China before obtaining a Masters in Engineering in Computer Science from the Hebei University of Technology.
The two Chinese universities are unheard of in the international arena, but NTU obviously found him highly “qualified” to engage him as an associate professor.
As per the usual practice now, the media dared not reveal if Li is a Singapore PR or new citizen. NTU has since terminated Li’s services.

A FORMER associate professor of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) accused of outraging the modesty of a student was yesterday given a discharge amounting to an acquittal.
The charge against Mr Li Jinyan, 41, was withdrawn after he offered $5,000 to the 22-year-old student, apologised to her and undertook to stay away from her.
Until NTU fired him in July, he belonged to its School of Computer Engineering.
He had been accused of touching the student's buttocks in a room in one of the blocks on campus on Sept 11 last year.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Stella Tan Wei Ling told the court that the prosecution was agreeable to his application to compound the matter for $5,000 and an apology.
She further noted that the victim had asked him not to approach her in future.

There can't be a court case if the plaintiff withdraws. Then charge the defendant with what against who? This is called settle out of court. Perfectly legal not only in Singapore but also US, UK etc. Only exceptions are direct crimes against the state (e.g. damaging public property) or when there's a dead body. The kins of the corpse can't settle out of court even if they want to.
