Ex-NS policeman charged with accepting bribes

SINGAPORE: A former police officer attached to the Subordinate Courts has been charged with accepting bribes to smuggle items into the facility's lockup.
Sulaiman Firdaus, who was a Special Constable performing his National Service, allegedly accepted a total of S$200 from two different people in 2008.
It's believed he received S$50 from someone known only as "Raz" between June and July that year.
Sulaiman, 23, allegedly smuggled items such as tobacco leaves and a lighter head into the lockup.
It's believed he also accepted S$150 from Thomas Cheng between July and August, that year, for performing a similar favour.
Sulaiman, who is now jobless, is represented by lawyer Shashi Nathan.
His pre-trial conference will be held on September 22.
If convicted of bribery, he can be jailed up to five years, fined a maximum of S$100,000, or both, for each of his two charges.
