Jermaine Pennant denied victory in S.League debut for Tampines Rovers

Former Singapore international John Wilkinson breaks down Jermaine Pennant's performance in his S. League debut.

Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant was denied a winning start in his S.League debut as Tampines Rovers were held to a thrilling 3-3 draw by Geylang International in front of 2,930 fans at the Jurong West Stadium on Monday night.

With Pennant coming on a second half substitute, Tampines squandered a two-goal lead to trail 3-2 with just 11 minutes to go. But they managed to salvage a point via a Yasir Hanapi stunner five minutes from time.

The Stags ending the game with just nine men after both Noh Rahman and Yasir were sent off.

Geylang started strongly and had the early opportunities, with Shariff Samat's header going just wide and Safirul Sulaiman's snapshot being parried by Tampines goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud.

But it was Tampines who opened the scoring on 13 minutes via a swift counter-attacking move. Canadian winger Jordan Webb went on a barnstorming run through the middle, exchanged passes with Billy Mehmet before firing a deflected shot past the stranded Geylang custodian Syazwan Buhari.

Despite the setback, Geylang carved out the better openings with Croatian hit man Branko Cubrilo just failing to latch on to Amy Recha's teasing right-wing cross.

Once again, Tampines showed more clinical finishing on 34 minutes. Left back Hafiz Sujad evaded Shariff's challenge before curling in a delightful cross for an unmarked Mehmet to side foot home a first time volley.

To the the visitors' credit, they managed to hit back and halve the deficit within a minute. Former Singapore Under-23 forward Amy Recha skipped past three challenges before lashing inside Izwan's near post from inside the box.

The goal scorer picked up where he left off in the second half by dispossessing Hafiz to set up Carlos Delgado inside the box, but the latter scuffed his shot disappointingly wide.

The Argentine midfielder then made amends on 55 minutes, firing home a sizzling half-volley from just outside the box after the Tampines' defence failed to deal with a corner.

Pennant came on in the 56th minute and took up the position just behind Mehmet. But before he could make an impact, captain Noh Rahman was dismissed for a second bookable offence for a late challenge on Al-Qaasimy Rahman and Tampines found themselves down to 10 men before the hour.

The visitors took advantage and completed the turnaround on 79 minutes. With the Tampines' defence at sixes and sevens after Branko Cubrilo played the ball in from the left, Stanely Ng seized in to arrow a brilliant finish into the top right corner.

But just when the Eagles thought they done enough to win the game, Tampines managed to pull level at 3-3 six minutes later with a moment of brilliance from Yasir. He guided a stupendous first-time volley from the Mehmet layoff that dipped over the despairing dive of Syazwan.

Yasir's joy proved to be short-lived as he was dismissed shortly after for an apparent elbow on Geylang substitute Gabriel Quak.

With Tampines now down to nine men, Geylang pushed forward in injury time and nearly grabbed a winner via Taufiq Ghani's piledriver. But Izwan managed to get down low to parry the goal-bound shot.

Geylang coach Hasrin Jailani was understandably the happier of the two coaches.

"Instead of being disappointed [at not getting the win], I'm very happy with how my team played," said the 40-year-old. "My game plan was to let Tampines come at us before winning the ball in our defensive third.

"We did that well and managed to get a point away from home against a very good Tampines side. Even though with nine men, they were going forward to create something."

Meanwhile, Tampines coach V Sundramoorthy lamented the defensive errors which his side made after going two goals up.

"Definitely I wanted to win this game, but football is such a game that we cannot predict," he said. "We knew Geylang came with a game plan trying to contain us, but we should have kept our composure and wrapped the game up.

"But playing with nine men, I will take the point as a good start and move on."

Charges: Jermaine Pennant will hear the case against him in court next week

Stoke City star Jermaine Pennant allegedly attacked a woman and then crashed his car while drunk in the early hours of this morning.

The 29-year-old former England Under-21 international was today charged with drink-driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance after his white BMW collided with a silver Audi in Sale at 5.20am.

The driver of the Audi was taken to hospital after the collision, which took place ten minutes from Pennant's luxury mansion in Hale, Cheshire.

The Audi driver was later discharged after treatment for minor back injuries.

Pennant will appear at Trafford Magistrates' Court to hear the driving-related charges on Wednesday 9 May.

Police apparently arrested the footballer following an allegation that a woman had been assaulted at a Manchester nightclub just under two hours before the accident.

A police spokesperson said: 'At approximately 3.30am a woman was assaulted at a nightclub on Barton Arcade, Manchester City Centre.

'A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of section 47 assault. He has been bailed pending further inquiries.'

Pennant was signed by Arsenal for £2million on his 16th birthday, following a difficult childhood.

His career looked to be on the up when he signed for Liverpool for £6.7million and he later went on to play in Spain.

After having a child, Trey, he said his troubled past was behind him, but a few months later he finished with his fiancee Lara Murphy.

He joined Stoke in the 2010-11 season and played in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

PENNANT'S PAST

In February 2004, Pennant was given a sixteen-month ban from driving after being seen in the wrong lane in Paddington, West London.
In 2005, while on loan at Birmingham, the 22-year-old Arsenal midfielder crashed in the centre of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, at 6.20am.
His eyes were glazed and his speech slurred, and a breath test found he was almost two-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit, the court heard.

He spent 30 days in jail for drink-driving and driving while still serving his previous ban.
He initially told officers that he was his Arsenal team mate Ashley Cole.
Two years later, the Liverpool player collapsed on a flight from Spain to Stansted following a 24-hour drinking binge.

This is not the first time Pennant has landed in hot water over his behaviour off the pitch.

In February 2004, Pennant was banned from from driving, and in 2005 he spent 30 days in prison for drink-driving and driving while still serving his previous ban.

The teenage prodigy was a £3.2million signing and then the youngest player to play for the club, but Arsene Wenger eventually ran out of patience with his poor time-keeping and lack of discipline.

He returned to Birmingham after his conviction - and even played while wearing an electronic tag.

Defending Pennant in 2005, Barry Warburton told the court he had never been in trouble during a difficult childhood in Nottingham.

Mr Warburton said he grew up on 'one of the worst estates' in the city, the eldest of four children, and brought up the three others after his mother left until he was 15.

Pennant had only 'intermittent' schooling, the court heard.

'When he left school and arrived at Arsenal FC, he had very little reading and writing skills. "They have in fact educated him,' Mr Warburton said.

Holy shit. Just a few days only in SG and she is implying SG are thieves who steal her things.

And I recall reading somewhere she said she need to go back to UK for her job and her child's education. She lying or just making fun of people here with her double talk?

With her tits and butts (looks fakes to me) for all to see, who needs anything else from her?

Jermaine Pennant has dumped his fiancée Lara Murphy, replacing her with younger model Alice Goodwin.

Glamour girl Alice claims on Twitter that her hobbies include 'getting naked' and has posted various provocative shots on her Facebook page.

The Stoke City player also apparently missed his son Trey's first birthday last weekend after reportedly moving his new girlfriend into his home.

Jermaine, 28, ended his relationship with Lara, 27, despite her claims he was 'the best dad in the world'.

He then publicly declared his love for Alice, 25, on Twitter after another user of the social networking site warned her he would cheat again.

The Premiere League star said: '@M1050 stop hating lad... Hahaha we are very happy actually.'

And Alice seemed blissfully ignorant to his philandering ways, adding: '@Jermaine_P the most perfect guy in the world...

'Looooove my man @Jermaine_P perfect Sunday '

Pennant is thought to have got close to Alice at the end of April before apparently moving her into his luxury flat in Altrincham, Cheshire.

Jennifer Metcalfe bumped into old flame Jermaine during a night out with Dancing On Ice partner Sylvian Longchambon and co-stars Gemma Merna and Georgie Porter

Lara, who had been planning her wedding to Pennant since getting engaged in May last year, is said to be shocked by the news.

A source told The Sun: 'She's devastated. She was totally besotted with him.'

Before leaving Lara, Pennant said the birth of his son had 'changed his life', adding, 'I'm going to be there for my boy.'

Jermaine is known for his chequered past, with a series of flings and driving convictions - including a jail sentence in 2005.

In 2007, ex-girlfriend Amii Grove sought revenge on her lover after discovering CCTV footage of him cheating.

The glamour model destroyed £200,000 of Pennant's 'designer gear'.

He was later arrested following the domestic disturbance and ordered to pay a fixed penalty fine.

Despite his reputation, he still managed to win over the affections of Hollyoaks actress Jennifer Metcalfe afterwards.

He then spent a year going back and forth between the two girls, and was even engaged to Grove briefly.
