We used to have this excellent anti-criminal community spirit in SG, but ever after the PAP scholar govt's implementation of fake safety police-state we totally lost this REAL and Effective security. We live only in self-imagination of false security these days, where our mata will only flee for their own lives, and our neighbours don't trust one another, our next doors are hostile FTs or Sia-Lan Kiasu-Kiasi Singaporeans.

In Taiwan 2 thieves were caught by peasants armed with farming hoes and sticks can not hide nor run, as whole village were out after them. They broke-in to a villagers house, hurt owner and got away with stolen items, but soon the PA loud speak broadcasted in by village leader giving descriptions of the thieves, they tried to hide and stripped of clothes fitting the broadcast descriptions.

Still got arrested by peasants! :D

Community spirit or "kampong spirit" in Singapore has been destroyed by the local housing/residence systems.

In private condos, the occupants all can't wait for resale to make money or enbloc to make more money.

In the heartlands, it could have, but ethnic sentiments, the "upgrade to condo" sentiments, and more recently, the invasion of foreigners who do not speak Singlish have not contributed to cement the community.

Don't expect those in landed property estates to form close knit communities - they speand their leisure time at their private country clubs.

Social cohesion may be found among some groups at their churches, mosques, temples, and some social/activity clubs.

Cheers!

To be honest kampong spirit is only alive in villages and this is true for places all over the world. In the big cities there's less of that spirit and this is true for any country. Since sg doesn't have any kampongs there won't be such a spirit same thing as a place in new york for eg.

I'm actually glad they created the ethnic quota thing. It's cos of this sg doesn't have the problems france faces with muslim enclaves in some neighbourhoods.

SGP peasants lost their good community anti-criminal spirit after the PAP evicted them from villages into HDB flats. This is when they had began their silly false believes about LAWS & MATA providing them with securities and then they turn ugly greedy coward and selfish. Then we came to his era to have Everiite Road Good Neighbours EVERYWHERE!

All peasants want to fuck one another! Fucked together by FTs!:*::oIo:

Fucked by PAP also!

In our villagers' day this will fucking never happen. Singaporeans used to be one cooperative and caring and understanding community. One house broken in by thieves the whole village will turn out with weapons. Faster than even mata could come to any knowledge of the crimes.

Yeah damn sad how i wish they never built the flats and everyone just lived in a kampong.

I remembered that many malays or what smoked ganja. Did they use a bong?

Back then, the bong was improvised. They (well, we, haha) used a papaya leave stalk inserted into a bottled half filled with water. The base of the stalk was further carved to increase its cavity's volume.

Cigarette rolling paper was rare. In place we used dried Nipah palm leaves (rokok daun), mostly mixed with tobacco, those were our joints.

When none of the above were available, we'd empty a cigarette of tobacco, and refill it with mixed tobacco and grass. And reduce the filter's size. My friend's gf was good at this.

Cheers!

The earlier flats in the 1970s retained this kampung spirit. My parents and their peers in the same kampung were relocated and allocated the same block of flats. Everybody knew each other door to door and floor to floor. The kids knew each other too. At anytime, we could find 20 friends to play a neighborhood football game. Kids now? Sigh.

There were robberies too. The uncles and big brothers and little brothers all sitting at the coffeeshop downstairs would ensure that the robbers ended up in hospital before the police arrived. :D

I forgot all about the daun we used. You have to sort of flatten it with your comb on your thigh before if becomes plaible enough to roll.

And during our days at the Nee Soon School of Signals for the Radio Ops 3 months course, we practically denuded the papaya trees growing right outside the dorms, reachable to those living on the 2nd floor. Each of the dorms had 2 bedrooms and a tiny living room, quite comfy actually. The camp were built for the Anzuc Force before SAF took over.
Those of you who attended the RO or signallers course there would have remember the 2 teenaged girls selling char kway teow just across the road. Father Chinese and mother Malay. They were beautiful. Back in those days, only thing I could do was try to stop the heart from fluttering too much.

I remember we had an egg fight on the last night before we were posted out. The postings had to be postponed for a day for the cleaning up. Just lucky that was our only punishment.

Alamak of course if the entire kampung was relocated to the same place they would still retain the spirit lah. Even if they moved all of you to bunglows or to a mansion you would retain that spirit.

lianbeng adds 2 cents, "the day they started putting fire to burn down old kampongs like changi, no more kampong spirit liao lah. in those days, u could sleep at night without doors n fences but ever since they said 'a roof for every head', all shut in to themselves liao - all boh chup liao lah.":(
