A foreign worker from China who faced deportation had apparently used his girlfriend to escape at the airport.
According to his employment agent, a woman known only as Michelle, the foreign worker, 24 year-old Long Tao, has been working in Singapore as a mover for over two years.
The employment contract of the Shandong native was terminated recently after he was caught smoking illegal cigarettes at the end of March.
He was ordered to be deported back to China on 23 April.
On that day, his girlfriend had accompanied him to the airport. Michelle was also at the airport to make sure Long leaves Singapore.
With an hour to go before his flight, Michelle kept asking him to head to the boarding gate. But Long replied that he was waiting for a friend who wanted him to bring something back to China for him.
Later, he said that his friend was lost in the airport and he wanted to go and find him.
As Long walked away talking on his mobile phone, his girlfriend began bombarding Michelle with a lot of questions. The agent later thought she saw someone resembling Long entering the gate.
But the next day, Michelle found out from the airline that Long did not board the plane. She called the police immediately.
Suspecting that he was hiding at his girlfriend’s home, Michelle visited the place a few days later. Other tenants confirmed that Long was still staying there, but would return later than usual.
Michelle returned again with the police at 2am the next day, but could not find the illegal immigrant. However, the police found a piece of men’s clothing on the bed, which Long’s girlfriend claimed to be hers.
The employment agency is not letting matter rest. It is now offering a $3,000 reward to find Long.
If he cannot be found in a month, the company will be blacklisted by the Ministry of Manpower.
