SINGAPORE: The labour movement is celebrating its success with productivity gains from the initiatives by the National Productivity and Continuing Education Council.

One of the first initiatives that the council endorsed after it was set up in August last year was a 40-million-dollar Inclusive Growth programme.

It is administered by the labour movement through its Employment and Employability Institute (e2i).

So far, about 20,000 workers from 255 companies have benefited from the productivity gains from the programme.

The first inclusive growth carnival was held on Saturday at Downtown East to celebrate this achievement.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and labour leaders joined some 4,000 workers and their families in activities.

These include games built around the themes which the tripartite partners have been promoting for workers.

The Inclusive Growth programme targets some 25,000 low-wage workers who earn about S$1,400 a month.

Funding is pegged to companies' commitment to measure and set targets on productivity improvements and share the gains with workers in the form of better pay.

DPM Teo, who is also chairman of the National Productivity & Continuing Education Council, said: "First of all, productivity is important for the individual worker and his family because it gives him the skills to continue upgrading, stay competitive and gives him a secure job and income for his family.

"Secondly, the companies and workers need to work together and that's part of the reason for this carnival - to encourage teamwork.

"Thirdly, the government, the NTUC have various programmes to help companies as well as workers to increase their productivity.

"So we are working with trade associations, business federations to roll out programmes.

"At the same time, e2i has 255 projects going involving 20,000 workers. In this way, we hope the productivity message goes to both levels - companies and workers".
