In an update to the Bukit Merah case involving a man with a knife, the police gave more details regarding the attack.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a 48-year-old Singaporean Chinese man had allegedly attacked 4 individuals who were residing in the Bukit Merah unit with a knife.
The four individuals were asleep at the time.
He then allegedly assaulted two of the tenants, both female, with the knife.
The other two tenants, both male, came to their help, and attempted to subdue the man.
Another 31-year-old male tenant who had awoken from his sleep in another room during the commotion, had escaped from the unit to seek assistance from police officers on patrol nearby. He did not suffer any injuries.
During the incident, one of the two female tenants, a 59-year-old woman, managed to escape and find help at the ground floor.
The woman, who had blood-stained hands, approached the officers who were patrolling the vicinity. They then proceeded to the unit, which was on the second floor.
The 48-year-old man was then subdued and arrested by the police officers for suspected voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapon, possession of offensive weapon, and drug-related offences.
Two men and two women, aged between 18 and 59 were conveyed to the hospital. The details of the individuals are as follows:
a) One 39-year-old woman, Vietnam national. She suffered knife wounds and is undergoing medical treatment. She is in a stable condition.
b) One 59-year-old woman, Malaysian national. She suffered knife wounds and is undergoing medical treatment.
c) One 18-year-old man, Malaysian national. He fell down a flight of stairs while fleeing from the scene. He is in a stable condition.
d) One 24-year-old man, Malaysian national. He suffered knife wounds and is undergoing medical treatment.
According to the press release, the man is believed to have acted alone and preliminary investigations do not suggest this to be an act of terror.
He has been traced for several drug offences since 1991, and was last released from prison on October 6, 2020 for his last drug-related conviction, where he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and six strokes of the cane.
Police investigations are ongoing. Notwithstanding the preliminary findings and the arrest of the man, the police are continuing their investigations into the motive of the assault and have stepped up enhanced patrols in the vicinity of the incident.
