THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described as 'shocking' a comment to the Singapore media by former Romanian diplomat Silviu Inoescu, who is linked to a hit-and-run accident which killed one man and injured two others last Dec 15.
In a phone interview with The Straits Times on Thursday, Dr Ionescu said in his first comments since leaving the country on Dec 18, three days after Mr Tong Kok Wai, a victim in the accident at Bukit Panjang, was killed: 'Someone died. It's not something solitary, but happens all over the world. There are bigger stories out.'
An MFA spokesman on Friday said the ministry finds this comment 'shocking'.
'We trust the Romanian authorities do not share Dr Ionescu's irresponsible and callous attitude.'
Responding to other comments by the former embaby charge 'd'affaires, the spokesman said it is in Dr Ionescu's interest to return to Singapore to attend a coroner's inquiry into Mr Ong's death next week.
Dr Ionescu has denied having anything to do with the accident that killed Mr Tong, or another later that day that left two people injured. Singapore police investigations have revealed that he was the driver of the embassy car at the time of the accidents.
