SINGAPORE: Dr Ong Chit Chung, a Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC, has passed away on Monday morning.

He was 59 years old.

His son, James, told Channel NewsAsia Dr Ong was at home when he died peacefully.

A five-term MP, Dr Ong was a lecturer in military history at the National University of Singapore when he went into politics in 1988.

He won the single-seat ward of Bukit Batok for two terms before the constituency became part of the Bukit Timah GRC (in 1996), and then Jurong GRC (in 2001).

In 1991, Dr Ong was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs and Labour.

He later left the world of academia and joined the private sector.

At the time of his death, he was President of Davos Life Sciences Pte Ltd.

During his twenty years in politics, Dr Ong had also served as the Chairman for the Government Parliamentary Committees for Education, Defence and Foreign Affairs.

Details of the wake and funeral will be announced later.

He was my ex-Executive Director in 1990- 1991, quite a nice fellow and approachable person.

May he rest in peace.

The one (LKY) supposed to go but not going, always good man go first.

Why is God playing with such merciless game between human to human?

Haiz ......

God call for good men because he got better plans for them. Those that left behind already got their due in their lifetime and nothing more to offer.:p

Is he a current MP? Is there going to be a by-election?

Is there going to be a by-election?

Since he is part of a team of MPs managing a GRC, no by-election will be called as the extra workload, if any, will be done by the other members of the team.

U have the point, but I must separate ur point for now.

He being part of PAP member, he is still the devil in the human shadow, but being a boss, he is very approachable and understanding fellow.

This what I always have in mind about him, Demi God, Demi Evil.
Anyway, he has already gone to meet the God to answer his past deed.

May he rest in peace....

Maybe thats what the PAP mini$ters do every night. Hug a pillow full of money in case they don't wake up tomorrow to see (and smell) it!

though he went for a heart bypass surgery,he was very healthy and fit, exercise regularly.
heart-attack is very scary, sometimes you do not even know that you have it. and when it strikes,90% will not survive,i think this is what they call acute-heart attack, even any tests you do will not/seldom detects it.

no by-election,it was stated. his ward and duties will be spread among those other MPs in the group. the rules and regualtions do not stated that if any MP in a Group GRC passed away or resigned or being asked to leave, there must be a by-election unless it is a SINGLE ward.

Ivan must be wringing his hands in glee. His chances of a run next GE has just went up exponentially.
