I will tell you this about Dr. Chee. He fights for Singapore and its people, not because he wants to be rich or he wants to be in the news. Dr. Chee simply cares. He cares that we are denied our rights, that we are oppressed, and that laws and policies are implemented by the incumbent party that are not desirable for the citizens of Singapore.
Dr. Chee, rarely speaks from the perspective of “I” but rather, from that of “we”. That is because the man is not about himself. He does not speak about himself. He hardly speaks about what he’s been through. If ever he does, it is just to make a point. Dr. Chee likes to focus on the issues and what needs to be done to resolve the issues. Dr. Chee is as humble as they come, yet passionate about the cause, our cause, the people’s cause.
Every time I listen to him speak or I speak to him, I come away at ease and I think, if more Singaporeans could only take the opportunity to do that – speak with him or listen to him speak. Then they will know the Dr. Chee that we know……that in spite of all the hatred that has been spewed at him by his fellow Singaporeans, in spite of the fact that Singaporeans have time and time again chosen to listen to the deceivers than to the one who was telling the truth, Dr. Chee continued to fight for us, he continued to care.
Even when I was not with the PAP, even when I was pro-opposition, I chose to believe the liars that were the PAP. But I grew wary. I began to read the books. Books written by J.B. Jeyaratnam, Teo Soh Lung, Dr. Chee, by those imprisoned under ISA, and other politicians and historians. That was when I started to actively seek out the truth and not vicariously through the books. Meeting Dr. Chee was not a disappointment. This man has no airs about him. He is grounded in his beliefs and his beliefs are cemented in his desire for a better Singapore for Singaporeans. And when a man has lost all that he has lost and still continues to care enough to fight for the Singapore that he loves and the Singaporeans that he loves, how can I not fight with him?
