The MAS believe they can "protect" uninformed investors and prevent a repeat of the Lehman Brothers-linked Minibonds fiasco in 2008. When reached for comments, MAS said they "carefully considered the cost-benefit of the new requirements, and are of the view that the potential benefits in terms of enhanced protection to retail investors in the sale and advisory process for special investment products(SIPs) outweigh the costs, particularly in light of today's volatile market". (Good Lord, I thought MAS was the one pushing for plain Engrish in all financial institutions when talking to the public?)

If MAS truly cares about people getting duped, they should then impose similar ruling for stocks, which is even riskier than funds. Nobody knows the effects and effectiveness of this new practice. U-turn policies to correct a foreseeable fault only waste everyone's time. Perhaps MAS meant well for investors, but the test is more suitable for Ho Ching.

She already took the "daughter-in-law" test.
All other tests henceforth are not necessary.

There are some people on this earth who are simply born with the talent of being able instinctively spot market trends. Warren Buffet is one such person. Ho Ching is another. I would propose that the test requirements be waived for exceptionally talent individuals.

I received letters from my broker(s) informing me of the new requirement . If I didn't meet the knowledge criteria I could take an online course. If I can't show that I have the knowledge it means that I'm not eligible to invest in any of the SIP(Specified Investment Products) securities.

Isn't the source of the problem banks pushing products which their own staff don't understand:confused:

Another piece of red tape? Another opportunity to give their dogs some juicy bones carved out from the citizens ribs.

Will this ever prevent scams and dishonest dealings? No.

Will this ever prevent people from losing their money? No.

Will this generate fees and profit for cronies? Absolutely Yes.

When FXCM had to stop accepting Spore clients, they referred me to a Spore forex broker. I can tell you that the rules & regulation in Spore are not investor friendly. You need a large capital base to get involved in forex.
I used to invest locally but there are too many additional charges e.g. gst, gst on dividens, monthly charges for holding scripts,... etc

These extra charges don't exist in the US & Malaysia market. Just my opinion but why So why would anyone want to invest via a Spore broker:confused:
