SINGAPORE - He owed nearly $40,000 in phone bills, bank loans and furniture purchases. According to online news reports, Mr Lee Kong Beng had often joked about shooting himself if he could not settle the debt.

On May 31, 2010, the 39-year-old had reportedly said "I cannot take it any more" just minutes before he was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head.

The AETOS auxiliary police officer was found face-up on the floor of the toilet at about 3.30pm with his service revolver beside him.

The Straits Times reported that colleagues had heard him muttering the above phrase while standing in line to return weapons to the armoury at the AETOS office in Corporation Road.

Colleagues claimed he had seemed normal during his shift at the Tuas checkpoint from 12.30am to 3pm that Monday.

State Coroner Victor Yeo said in court earlier today that Mr Lee had died of a self-inflicted gun shot.

Investigations also revealed a handwritten note found in his right front pants pocket, where he apologised for what he had done.

The constable had been working with AETOS for about two years.
