MM Lee: You must want to die for each other
By Elgin Toh
Mr Lee said Singapore was still a nation in the making, an aspiration and not a reality. -- ST PHOTO

THIS was the challenge Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew threw to Singaporeans on Friday at the launch of Hard Truths, a new book about his beliefs.

Mr Lee said Singapore was still a nation in the making, an aspiration and not a reality.

Citing China as an example of a bona fide nation, MM Lee said that China can be 'ravaged, demolished', but the people would invariably come together again to rebuild it. If the same thing happened to Singapore, it may simply fall apart.

'Do not believe we have got there,' he said. 'Will we make it? Am I certain we'll get there? No, I cannot say that. Something can go wrong somewhere, and we'll fall apart.'

The 458-page book, Hard Truths To Keep Singapore Going, is based on 16 interviews he gave to Straits Times journalists. Published by Straits Times Press, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Singapore Press Holdings, the book is now available for $39.90 at all major bookstores.

On Friday's launch event at the John Jacob Ballroom, St Regis Singapore, was attended by 160 guests, including diplomats, academics, MPs, captains of industry, and Mr Lee's daughter, Wei Ling.

GE akan datang. I wonder if history is on MM's side. S'pore may not fall apart when 'ravaged, demolished'. It may galvanise all S'poreans and we emerge stronger than ever. Only morons will believe what was said by MM.

Only morons will believe what a deluded senile says. But to be fair to him, thanks in no small measure to his past works when he wasn't a deluded senile, Singapore has a very established stable system and infrastructure. Not that easily ravaged or demolished even if we take PAP out of the whole equation. In such a scenario, the replacing party needs to be sane, that's all, no genius required.

So , he has been selling us dreams all along ? Need a reality check

'cos all the FTs and million dollar lap dogs will flee at the very first signs of danger

'Do not believe we have got there,' he said. 'Will we make it? Am I certain we'll get there? No, I cannot say that. Something can go wrong somewhere, and we'll fall apart.'

The end for him and the party is so f**king near

Given the current quality in Cabinet, there should be many competent chaps in the private sector who can perform better than the existing bunch and at lower cost to tax payers.

You are right. The system and infrastructure is established and stable. As long as we keep madmen out, we won't head southwards.

Singapore may not be as stable as you think. There is still undercurrent of geopolitical tension with Indonesia and our economy is shaky. A lot of stability is illusion. I won't count on it.

Old fart better impress this point on to the millions of PRs and new citizens.

The marketing campaign for the PAP coming election had begun, once again, like the last time, the promise of building this & building that, haven't we heard this before??

Once again, we have an old record ( vinyl) player, playing remastered versions of his own hit records, haven't we heard that before?

He has done a lot for us, but we are paying dearly for many of his failed experimentations...aand many of us are products of that, and the worse part of it all...the ' old chicken is now blaming the eggs that were hatched and now they are CHICKENS, for not carry out their genetically modified instructions...ha ha ha ha

The 'old leaf' should fade into the sunset , so that we can still admire him for all we care or hate him also.

We are one uniquely YOUR sinGAPORE, that election dates, have to be guessed, have to be announced like a lottery date by the politician of the land.?

We certainly need sane voters & equally sane politicians to lead us all into the future.:p

When he dies, and hopefully don't get up again. we will become a nation right away.

The PAP likes everyone to believe that if there was no "premium" political party like the PAP, Singapore will fall apart. The foreign investors will pull out and overnight, Singapore will become a slum.

How true is this?

Thailand is a best example of why this is PAP bullshit.

Since Thaksin was toppled in a coup, Thailand has had practically no effective functioning government. There have been coups, demonstrations, pitched battles in the streets, airport takeovers, mass arsons, sniping, drive by grenade launches etc.

In spite of this, Thailand has not fallen apart. The economy chugs along and there is resonable GDP growth that is not fueled by a massive import of foreigners. The tourists still visit Thailand and foreign business continue to invest in Thailand. And we are not talking about a short term period. It has almost been 5 years since Thaksin was removed and Thailand was punged into the current political crisis.

The PAP crowing about how they are responsible for Singapore economic growth is therefore akin to the Mayan priests who used to claim that they were responsible for making the sun rise every morning.

Currently Sing dollar salaries are of course still a lot higher than Thailand. However if we look at purchasing power, we see a completely different story. If we use purchasing power parity (like in the UBS study), the Thais have advanced realtive to Sngaporeans. Under PAP rule, Sngaporeans now amazingly have lower purchasing power vis-a-viz Malaysians in KL.

Thailand has a long rich history.

furthermore, they have the King to turn to. the government runs the daily operations. but keeping things together is the King?

what do we here?

what's the Singapore way of life?

If we die together, he will have his own FT regime.
