SINGAPORE: ION Orchard will close for four days starting Saturday (Jun 12) as a precautionary measure after several COVID-19 cases were linked to the mall, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Friday.

The closure will begin at 7am on Saturday and end at 7am on Wednesday, the mall's operator said.

In a notice to tenants, the operator said that all staff and tenants - including contractors and vendors who worked at the mall from May 28 to Jun 11 - will be required to undergo a swab test during the period of closure.

"In view of the urgency, ION Orchard has arranged for deep cleaning of your shops on your behalf and will be at your cost," the notice stated.

In its evening update, MOH said it was investigating three COVID-19 cases - referred to as 64112, 64114 and 64135 - all of whom work at the Orchard Road shopping mall.


Case 64135 was one of three unlinked cases found in the community on Friday.

The 57-year-old woman, a sales promoter working at the mall's Guardian outlet, tested positive for COVID-19 on Jun 10 after developing a dry throat on Jun 7 and an ear ache on Jun 10.

"To break any potential chain of transmission and enable deep cleaning of the premises, ION Orchard will be closed to all members of the public starting from Jun 12 and will reopen four days later on Jun 16," said MOH.

Special testing operations will also be conducted for staff who had been working at the mall from May 28.

Members of the public who had visited the shops or used the services at ION Orchard from Jun 3 to Jun 11 will also be offered free COVID-19 testing.

Individuals who had only walked through the mall to connect to neighbouring buildings or Orchard MRT station need not be tested, said MOH.

The ministry said those who visited ION Orchard from Jun 3 to Jun 11 should monitor their health closely and minimise social interactions as far as possible, for 14 days from their date of visit. They are also encouraged to see a doctor immediately if they feel unwell.

SINGAPORE: Singapore reported 12 new COVID-19 infections in the community as of noon on Saturday (Jun 12), including five with no links to previous cases.

Seven were linked to previous cases, with two already in quarantine and five detected through surveillance, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) in its daily preliminary update.

There were also nine imported cases - all returning Singaporeans or permanent residents. They have been placed on stay-home notice upon arrival in Singapore.

This takes the daily case count to 21.

Details of the cases will be released on Saturday night, said MOH.

New community cases in Singapore have been in the single digits for a week before Saturday's count of 12 infections. The last time it hit double digits was on Jun 5 when there were 13 cases.

SINGAPORE - A hawker centre at Block 79 Telok Blangah Drive will be closed for deep cleaning after a hawker there tested positive for Covid-19.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) had said on Monday (June 14) that a 42-year-old Singaporean man who is a hawker at the centre had developed body aches on June 12 and a fever on June 13.

He sought treatment at Singapore General Hospital and later tested positive for the coronavirus.

He is a family member of another Covid-19 case, a cooking assistant at 115 Bukit Merah View Market & Food Centre who tested positive on June 13.

As at Monday, there were 16 cases linked to the Bukit Merah centre, which is now a Covid-19 cluster.

The closure of the Telok Blangah Drive Food Centre for deep cleaning and disinfection as a result of Monday's case was announced in a Facebook post by West Coast GRC MP Rachel Ong on Tuesday night.

She said the National Environment Agency has been working together with the Telok Blangah Shopkeepers & Stallholders Association to engage stallholders and assist them with their concerns and enquiries.

The town council has also put up notices at the food centre and neighbouring blocks to inform residents about the situation.

She added: "The safety of our residents and stallholders are our topmost priority and we will continue to work to ensure that the necessary precautions are in place... We encourage all residents and friends to monitor your health closely and to see a doctor promptly if you feel unwell."

SINGAPORE: The COVID-19 multi-ministry task force is "evaluating the timing and scope" of the next stage of Singapore's reopening, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Jun 16).
"We are now at stage 1 of our reopening. Stage 2 is scheduled next Monday. Unfortunately we now have new cases breaking out and a major new cluster in Bukit Merah," said Mr Wong, who co-chairs the task force.

"Given these developments, we are evaluating the timing and scope of the next stage of reopening. The MTF is studying the situation carefully with public health experts and will provide further updates soon."
As of Tuesday, the Bukit Merah View Market and Food Centre COVID-19 cluster consisted of 25 cases.
In a video accompanying his Facebook post, Mr Wong said that the new COVID-19 cases in Bukit Merah are "breaking out not only in the market and the hawker centre, but also, all around the vicinity".
"And day by day, we are seeing the number of unlinked cases, the cryptic cases in the community are likely to be rising too," he said.

The market, which was slated to reopen on Wednesday after being closed since Sunday, will now be shut for two weeks until Jun 26.
Explaining the decision on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that the detection of more cases among employees at the market and their close contacts suggests there is "ongoing spread with wider transmission".
All staff and tenants who had been working at the market from May 25 were placed on quarantine, and will be tested during quarantine.

All 85 tenants and workers of the neighbouring 116 Bukit Merah View have also been tested for COVID-19, while free COVID-19 testing has been extended to members of the public who had visited the shops at 115 and 116 Bukit Merah View between May 25 and Jun 12.
Stallholders at Redhill Market and Food Centre, which is a short walk away from Bukit Merah View Market and Food Centre, will undergo mandatory swab tests after a COVID-19 case recently visited the market.
"I know this is a difficult time for everyone," Mr Wong said.
"I want to assure all of you that we are doing our very best to control the infection and we want to ensure that we do not have another flare-up before we reach sufficiently high levels of vaccination in our community."
Dining-in at food and beverage outlets is currently banned as part of Phase 3 (Heightened Alert) and was scheduled to resume on Jun 21, provided the COVID-19 situation remained under control.
