The accident happened because of the soldier's misjudgement. Evidently the practical solution is more training for NSmen.

Money cant buy lifes. But at least with pension front line security staffs are recognise for their risk they are forced to undertake. Those NS who died during course of training got NOTHING at all except a "promotion" n 21 gun salute. NOK also get nothing at all. The best is do away with NS or cut down to 6 - 12 mths NS

Banning conscription is like banning unprofessional drivers like you and I from the roads. Cars must be driven by highly qualified and highly paid professional drivers who must pass driving tests and medical examinations on a regular basis.
In an ideal world only top rally drivers and racing car drivers should be given licenses as only they have the skills needed to handle an emergency situation and deal with less than ideal conditions.
In reality we all know that my life and yours would be vastly different if this was implemented. There simply would not be enough drivers to cater to world demand.
National defense is similar especially for a small country. Suggesting that only the defense of a whole nation can be placed upon the shoulders of a few highly trained elite forces simply isn't realistic.

The active personnel in the Sinkie armed forces is 72,000, inclusive of 46,800 conscripts.

That's much better than Singapore. The SAF can only hold out for maximum 3 days and pray that Uncle Sam comes to help.
You need to understand the strategy that is the foundation for a successful defense of Singapore. The SAF is not going to sit back and wait for the enemy to arrive and establish a beachhead. By the time that happens Singapore would not last 6 hours let alone 3 days.

More than 100 attack fighters. Aerial refueling, early warning radar, troop deployment helicopters which obviously are not there to transport troops from Changi to Jurong.
I spent more than a decade in Tengah air base. Our defenses are formidable and I can assure you that the defense of my beloved Singapore does not take place within the Island. It involves projection of fire power and logistical support way beyond national boundaries.
