About 5.2kg of 'Ice' with a combined street value of more than $1.3 million has been seized by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) in three separate cases.
It is the largest haul of crystallised methamphetamine in Singapore to date.
Case 1
A 28-year-old Nigerian man arriving from Doha was detained for smuggling 2.6kg of the drug into Singapore on Nov 13 at Changi Airport Terminal 3.
While screening his luggage, an ICA officer spotted anomalies on the scan images and proceeded to question the man. The inner lining of the luggage was cut open for inspection.
Two packages containing a total of 2.6kg of 'Ice' was seized and handed over to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for further investigations.
Case 2
In a separate operation by CNB which took place on the same day around midnight, a 46-year-old Singaporean female was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint after 2.6kg of the drug was discovered in her luggage.
Case 3
In the late morning of Nov 14, a follow-up operation saw the arrest of a 26-year-old male Nigerian at a hotel in Chinatown. He is believed to be another member of the syndicate.
The 28-year-old Nigerian man will be investigated for carrying drugs into Singapore.
The 46-year-old woman and 26-year-old Nigerian man will be investigated for the offence of drug exportation and drug trafficking respectively.
If convicted, all three may face the death penalty under the Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA).
