The Communist Party has destroyed the greatest aspect of Chinese culture - how many people in PRC today can speak their real mother tongue?

My shift supervisor (couple of years back) was from Fukien Province, can't utter a single word of Hokkien. I presume the other regional languages are no longer spoken except by a few very old folks.

One thing good though is a lot of young PRC can speak English better than Singaporeans.

Cheers!

At least, Taiwan is doing something about reviving the Fujian language in schools but China trying to destroy it to make its people 'united' with one barbaric 'Han' language. Both provinces like Fu Jian and Guang Dong are considered as 'dangerous' or rebels.

Hock Kian (Fu Jian) : 反清复明 Anti-Ching Dynasty to revive the Ming Dynasty (power to Han people).

Canton : 革命! Revolution !

I really hope Fu Zhou will always be original and NOT too commercialised. Even some of the common food we eat in Indian Rojak or Lor Mee are actually Fu Zhou's foodstuff.

Sorry to pour cold water on your fiery post.

You presume wrong.

There are more than 20 dialects in the province of Fu Jien (Hokkien). There is no such dialect/language as 'Hokkien' in China.
What most people are familiar with is Min Nan Hua, which is what the Taiwanese, Singaporeans and Malaysians speak.
We broadly termed it as 'Hokkien' which is wrong. It is Min Nan Hua. There is also Min Bei Hua and many other dialects being spoken.

Almost everyone in China speak their own dialect amongst each other, except those in the North - Dong Bei, Beijing etc whereby
their dialect is mandarin or putonghua (common language).

For your information, there are more than 100 million people residing in Sichuan. If you go there, you will discover that the people will speak Sichuan Hua mostly.
Out of courtesy to outsiders, they will switch to mandarin/putonghua. Otherwise, they prefer to speak their native tongue.

If you go to places like Shenzhen in Guangdong, almost everyone is an outsider. The people in Shenzhen are from all over China.
Thus, you will hear mandarin being spoken mostly. Maybe, that is what gave you the impression that local dialects are being exterminated.

This is very very far from true.

Hi Spiky:

Thanks for bringing me up to date - especially on that Min Nan Hua part. Some of these "dialects" survive due to resistance and perserverance, they will never be completely eradicated. However, federal policies (other than for tourism) will see to it that putonghua dominates.

On a smaller scale, look at how the Speak Madarin Campaign in Sg has almost eliminated the use of hokkien, teochew and others among the youngsters. Initially, the drive to speak English in order to land a good job reduced the use of these, but we still witnessed teochew operas, poems, and the very popular Ah Bui and Ah San comedian team in public broadcast. But with the emphasis on Mandarin, it soon became Sg's "Mother Tongue." And what ever happened to "culture?"

The impression that local dialects are being exterminated came across to me not from visiting PRC, but from my superior at work. He emigrated from Fujian to Canada with his wife (and daughter) - so they could have a second child (again a national social engineering pratice - made into law.) He is a weel-read and qualified person with a Masters Degree in Chemistry. In China, he was a plant manager. In Canada where we worked together, he was my shift supervisor and immiediate superior. He once asked me (he knows about our NS) how many soldiers can Sg field in situation, I really don't know but guessed about fifty thousand infantrymen; when he heard that number, he started laughing and laughing. Upon understanding where he was coming from - I started laughing too.

Cheers!

you should compare Chiang Kai Shek handsome great grandsons to Mao Zedong Pui Cheebye great grandsons. :D

interestingly, Chiang a true Chinese nationalist never mind the fact that his descendants' bloodline were mixed, half Chinese only.

Mao is smart. He made Chiang the number 1 public enemy in China during the civil war.
