i was there back in '95.....really a tranquil and beautiful place......would be a perfect retirement place if it still belongs to Singapore

Yes the big red robber crabs colonise the whole island....they are everywhere.
But alas sinkies will lament that they are inedible

Robber crabs are edible. They taste like well.... crabs or lobsters and the ae reputed aphrodisiacs by the natives of polynesia.

That is not what LKY wants you to think. It is the corrupt Lim Yew Hock govt that sold Christmas island for self-profit.

Christmas Island is about the size of AMK plus Sembawang GRCs. However, it's population is about one typical block of 3-room flats only. Yes, one block. Less than 2,000 population. Nobody wants to migrate there, not even Australians immigration-free entry. It's not near to Singapore or Australia. It's near to Java, Indonesia. By air or by sea, Singapore has to pass Java airspace or sealane before reaching Christmas Island, Australia didn't have to though it's not that near too. Christmas Island was administered from Singapore under UK colonial government when Holland a friendly ally was still holding Indonesia (Dutch East Indies). After Indonesian independence, it became unfeasible and UK "sold" it to Australia. Singapore actually had no say in this.

Something similar to tongkat ali then. Any idea what they have for nightlife there? Polynesians usually out-of-shape. Hope it is not the after effects of their crabs.

Christmas Island at land area 135 km2 is 10% smaller than Taiwan Kinmen archipelago of several islands 150 km2 and 20% the size of Singapore 710km2

we sell off a single island? 20% SG land area, a bad mistake. It's time to rescind those unequal treaties forcibly signed away under colonization rule, long overdue to land our mighty SAF troops on Christmas Island.

SAF mighty? They couldn't even locate a limping man on home ground, how to win a battle over-the-sea? They are best kept at home. At least their image and reputation would not be so cruelly exposed for all the world to witness.

Christmas Island must return to the embrace of the motherland (SG) as soon as possible.

diplomatic negotiations will take too long, could drag for years in deadlock. military option faster, chop chop.

Christmas Islanders would protest and revolt if Singapore wants it back, for it means NS for them.

Christmas Island, INDIAN OCEAN, not to be confused with the other Christmas Island, which is part of Kiribati; was under the adminisration of the Colony of SINgapore. When we were given self-government, it was under the State of SINgapore..before we became the Republic of SINgapore..correct me, if I err on this..

quote "The other reason for his political downfall was that Christmas Island was administered by Singapore at that time. However, it was transferred to Australia in 1957, and that incident made Lim Yew Hock unpopular." uquote (Lim Yew Hock)

The island had a Malay, Chinese populations that came from SINgapore & settled there...somewhere down the years, when mining business was not viable...many of the islanders were resettled in Australia, their government gave them a house or something...one of my Australian friend family came from that Island, and their parents were orginally from SINgapore.

The red crabs are not edible, if not they will have flourishing sea food business...and would have much more famous LONGer Beach seafood Restn...

Christmas Island - pop. 1.5K - 70% Chinese, 20% European, 10% Malay. Almost the entire island is declared a national park.

The red crab is not edible but the robber crab is.

Christmas Islanders separatists would be severely dealt with by the Singapore Government.

if they are scared of NS, we can consider giving them one country, two systems. :p

From what I had spoken to an ex-Islander, the crabs invade the houses, during the migration period...they just ignore them, but when they crawl into some dark crevices of the cupboards in the house...that is a stench & a problem..

One of my reservist buddy, working as an airport policeman ( Changi) back in the late 80's, was stationed on Christmas Island immigration...did we every fly direct there from SINgapore?
