The Abrahamic religions have been going at each other's throats for centuries. No wonder because each claims its God is the bestest, the baddest and the strongest, and all the other religions' followers are infidels, kafirs and gentiles condemned to hell and purgatory.

The countries that are most intolerant are also those practising Abrahamic religions. The reason that the West has moved away from this religious bigotry is the gradual secularization of Western society since the Enlightenment and Industrial Revolutions.

precisely my point. they should ban all religions like they banned all religious activities in state funded schools in USA irrespective of type of religions. they are opoid of the masses for the weak and kiasi kiasu idiots. every one claimed superiority, jews , christtians, hinduism, cathlicism, muslims, sikhism, etc etc. resulting in outlandish fantastic promises of heavens, 72 virgins, the promised lands, etc etc.

Marx was right: religion is the opiate of the masses. I see religious dopes of all stripes on a daily basis; they're so rigid they can't think out of the box, and as you say, fear governs most of their actions at the subconscious level. You can't reason with these folks.

But to ban religion totally is to fall into the same trap of intolerance and bigotry of which religion is guilty. State-funded schools yes, not all society. Man must be allowed to make his choices and learn from them, bad or good. The Western societies have evolved through oppressive theocracies, Crusades, the Inquisitions, witch-hunts ... and realized that a separation of Church and State based on democratic secular rule is the only foundation for peace and stability.

Religion is no different to smoking. You can thru life without smoking. Its a crutch to some especially those who are born into poverty and and have not much in terms of hope. For others its that hope that religion will protect them here and then for the after-life.

And like smoking, it does have its side-effect. And people pay dearly.
