A lot of Cantonese like to think they are culturally superior to all the other dialect groups. But that is only because there are a lot more of them and due to the popularity of HK movies earlier on. The joke is on those among them who refuses to use Mandarin because they will simply become outcasts of the Chinese diaspora very soon.

I don't look down on Cantonese but they do have a reputation for being willing to eat almost anything and speaking as though they are having a fierce argument.

This makes them much bigger than any other single province. Note also that due to the terrain, Fujian has many dialect groups, Minnan or Hokkien as we call it is just one of them. Foochow or Hockchew is another major dialect group in Fujian. There are many other dialect groups like Hakka, Henghua, Teochew residing in Fujian province.

In fact, languages are often diverse from one site to another. Foochowese is actually a UNITED STATES (out of the 7 states in the Chou period, about 5 states mixed) language and much older than both Hokkien and Cantonese. So, that means Mandarin and Cantonese should not be a consideration at all if you want something representative of the Han people. But, since you want to maintain the unity of the other 4 barbaric states, you need to have that barbaric language which is the least Han language to maintain that peace since majority have already been using this language since the conquest of the northern region.

They have the heritage of the language maybe about 70 to 80 percent closer to Han tone. My apology too.

English Stole Roman Characters !

How to steal Chinese characters? Too difficult for them. They went steal from Romans. That was easier.

The English and the rest of Europa also stole the Roman so-called "alphabet" (shit ! now they stole the Greek's). And guess who came to stay in Italy ? Arabs and Northern Africans came ! They became the majority instead. Poor fellas ! Now, Singa-poo will be next, just after Norway !

Chinese characters is not the best language to be stored in computers but they more readily read and understood (signboards) as proven by the Japs.

The closest one can get to original Han dynasty pronunciation of Chinese is actually Japanese. However, Japanese don't differentiate between tones. There's no such thing as an ancient standard of Chinese or Mandarin. The Beijing dialect was standardised by Manchurian Emperor Kangxi less than 400 years ago, around the time of Shakespeare. Beijing has never featured as a major capital for any notable period in ancient history 2 to 4 thousand years ago since the fall of the 6 kingdoms to Qin Shihuang when Beijing was known as Yanjing, capital of State of Yan.

There were always many approximating Chinese dialect tongues but culturally united by the common Chinese characters. Ironically, Beijing (ancient Yanjing) regained it's status through foreign invasion, restored as capital first by Mongolians then by Manchurians. ROC shifted capital down to Nanjing but lost and fled to Taiwan. PRC moved capital back to Beijing because the south was still unstable and the Beijing dialect became known as standard Han Yu.

Good for you ! You seems to have a better grasp of the truth behind what was really going on. Beijing was Yanjing and a one word name which I have not given a closer look at it. Yan is swallow which is also phoenix. The Shang heritage ? Not really, half of it.

Northerners call themselves Han people. Southerners call themselves Tang people. That's why Chinatowns outside China populated by southern Chinese are called Tang People Streets, not Han People Streets. Singapore Chinese are mostly southerners. The word Han came in only with Hanyu Pinyin education and dictionaries.

during civil war when sui took over t'ang, there was turmoil in north but south still retained much of t'ang's peaceful ways and was not disturbed. many refugees from the north migrated to south and settled there, mostly in the teochew regions between fujian and guangdong provinces. today, you will find t'ang relics, towns and architecture still preserved in that part of china. and the t'ang language is still alive today, which is closer to chaozhou and fukienese.

u mean modern ppl of fujian ancestors were refugees from the north after the breakup of Tang Dynasty and another influx of refugees after Song lost northern china to the Liao?

Shanghainese also dont associate themselves with the southern ppl as they view themselves much superior than the rest of china.

Does foochow sound at least similar to hokkien?

Well it's the govt and most chinese to want the chinese to be united. What could be better than a shared language and culture.

In any case outsiders cannot even tell the different chinese apart. Even most chinese ppl cannot do that. They'll just assume all dialects are the same and mandarin is what different chinese use to communicate.

You know there's some sort of bias especially in the singaporean education system. Like most ppl will associate dialects with a lower class of people. Like when someone calls you a hokkien peng he means you're not very educated and an uncouth person. I was thinking and thought that mandarin kind of sounds more refined compared to the dialects. I was thinking is this simply cos most of the ppl that speak hokkien are low class and the higher classed hokkiens remained in china or moved to taiwan.

I mean if you think about it if a person converses in hokkien majority of the time chances are he's lowly educated, uncouth and most likely a shady character or a gangster.

You're confused between Fujian Minanese, Taiwanese and Singlish Hokkien. Nowhere in in Fujian Minanese or Taiwanese has such crude vulgarities as Singlish Hokkien. Singlish Hokkien is champion in not only among Chinese dialects but I think among all world languages.

BTW me Hokkien too, very good at Singlish Hokkien vulgarities too.
