Chinese airlines offer Japan flight refunds as row over Takaichi’s comments intensifies

Air China, China Southern and China Eastern announce the refunds hours after Beijing advises Chinese citizens to avoid travel to Japan

China’s biggest airlines have offered full refunds for flights to Japan after Beijing told Chinese citizens to avoid travel to the country, marking an escalation in a row over Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s suggestion that Tokyo could deploy its military forces in a cross-strait conflict. Air China, China Southern and China Eastern published separate statements on Saturday saying they would allow ticket holders to refund or change their itineraries for free for flights between Saturday and December 31. The policies only apply to tickets bought before noon on Saturday. The announcement came hours after China’s foreign ministry issued a warning late on Friday night asking Chinese tourists to avoid travel to Japan.

The former Prime Minister, under immense pressure while attempting to appease both superpowers, China and the US, eventually resigned from the position. Following this, the newly appointed, more laid-back Prime Minister stirred controversy by making far-right remarks about offensive one country and defending another country, potentially angering another nation.

Lest we forget…rape of Nanjing

Japan's newly appointed Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has sparked anger in China by asserting that a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan could be deemed a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan, potentially prompting a military response from Tokyo. Japan's Self-Defense Forces are solely intended for defensive purposes.
China, Russia, and North Korea—warships and troops would likely directly dock in Penghu.

Thanks to the Jippie PM .... our inbound ah tiong visitors booking went up by 15% .... HUAR HAAAA

Osaka tourism endures heavy hit as China-Japan tension simmers

Chinese visitors are Japan’s biggest spenders, accounting for a fifth of the nation’s ¥8.1 trillion tourism revenue.

Chinese visitors are Japan’s biggest spenders, accounting for a fifth of the nation’s tourism revenue.

OSAKA – Mr Denryu Lin, who runs about 80 holiday rentals in central Osaka, has been watching his business evaporate since late November as
tensions between Tokyo and Beijing escalate.

More than 600 bookings – over 1,000 Chinese guests – have been cancelled through the year-end, he said.

“Everyone I know in real estate and the travel industry is struggling,” he said, underscoring a sense of sector-wide stress that could tip into a broader crunch if the pullback persists.

Osaka, Japan’s second-largest economic hub and one of the clearest symbols of the nation’s reliance on Chinese tourism, is bearing the brunt of the pullback. Kansai International Airport has logged the steepest flight cuts nationwide, while hotels, retailers and restaurants face waves of cancellations.

Chinese visitors are Japan’s biggest spenders, accounting for a fifth of the nation’s 8.1 trillion yen (S$67 billion) tourism revenue. Their sudden retreat – triggered by Beijing’s advisory after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s Taiwan remarks – threatens one of the few bright spots for Japan’s economy.

China bookings for Osaka-bound travellers for winter and early spring departures are down 55 per cent to 65 per cent – a sharper drop than the nationwide average, with Kansai International Airport carrying a disproportionate share of cancellations, according to market researcher China Trading Desk.

Luxury spending by Chinese visitors in Osaka is projected to fall roughly by half to US$40 million (S$51.8 million) to US$60 million a month, it said.

Japan’s economic loss could reach 1.2 trillion yen in 2026 if travel freezes persist, said Mr Hiromu Komiya, an economist at the Japan Research Institute (JRI), adding that a quick easing of tensions could limit the damage to around 500 billion yen.

The reversal comes after Osaka enjoyed a nearly 50 per cent surge in Chinese arrivals earlier in 2025, fuelled by the six-month World Expo that boosted tourism across the region.

Forget about tourism revenue, national security is priceless.

Anyway these tiong only do business just to target their own country spending. It's not a good idea to let them set up business and stay for long term.

They don't create value, they will still good their own people. They just buy up your property. Becoming landlord.

The smarter Tiongs, whenever possible, stay the hell away from other Tiongs when overseas.

Any Tiong who approaches another Tiong with the 同胞同乡 nonsense in another country, it's mostly likely a scammer.
