As costs for the consumer increased, the Malaysian government introduced price controls, but these further compounded the shortage. To bolster food security, the controls were lifted late last year, and prices have risen as a result. They remain low by international standards, with a dozen regular eggs averaging $1.93 (£1.49) in the country.
