Letter from CST to PKMS and SJP

Attention To:

...Mr Ali bin Asjadi (President, Singapore Malay National Organisation )
Deputy Chairman, SDA

And

Mr Aminuddin Bin Ami
Secretary-General (Singapore Justice party)
Honorary Auditor , SDA

Dear Sirs, 12 November 2010

RE: Replacement of Desmond Lim as SDA SEC/Gen

In reference to the meeting held on the 27th Oct 2010 on the development of our party and its direction with the election of the new office holders, we had made it clear the grounds for which Mr Desmond Lim is relieved of his duties to represent us in SPP under the SDA banner.

The SPP have acted constitutionally by replacing Desmond in the list of SEC SDA under clause 11of the SDA Constitution ,the replacement of representative in the Exco of the SDA is within the member parties' rights.
Mr Lim has acted unconstitutionally under clause 9(a) which only allows the Chairman to represent SDA in its dealings with outside persons.

Let me highlight here the acts which goes against clause 9(a):

1) Mr Lim has been and is still organizing activities and issuing statements under the SDA banner via a facebook account without any discussion with SDA or with consent from the Chairman.

2)He has been issuing official letters on behalf of SDA without any consent or discussion with the Chairman of SDA in 3 accounts:
a)Issuing a press release under SDA SG on Mr Chiam selling out SPP to RP which he knows is not true.
b)Issuing a condolence letter to the Prime Minister office for the demise of PM's mother, the content of which has not been approved by the Chairman of SDA nor representative of SDA’s stand on this matter
c)Issuing a press release on PM National Day Rally 2010 which has not been discussed nor is deem representative of the Chairman’s nor SDA’s stand as an opposition party.

We should take this seriously as these comments are a reflection of the parties stand and they must be representative of what SDA stands for collectively and not by one man making independent decisions. All these statements were issued without knowledge and consent of the Chairman of SDA and I doubt through any knowledge from PKMS or SJP. Such actions should be considered as insubordination and unconstitutional. Despite being reprimanded during internal meetings in SPP, Mr Lim still continue in his ways and did not try to communicate or initiate discussion with me, the Chairman of SDA who he is supposedly representing on all these issues.

Further, on your report of my dysfunctional email account [email protected], I am sure all this has been circulated to the SG of SDA then as well. By right, all these should have been communicated to me through the SG - the chairman's secretariat, Mr Desmond Lim. But it had never been brought to my attention.

Hence, it can be said that even as late as August 2010 there was no proper channel through which Mr Lim as the SG of SDA initiate nor disseminate information about SDA developement with the SDA Chairman. As the president of PKMS you would also not accept this if it happened under your party too, right?

I feel that as the Chairman, a founder of SDA and a current and only MP in SDA, I should be given due respect which is owed to me constitutionally. As a component party of SDA and the party to which Mr Lim is supposedly representative of, we thereby see no reason to continue having a non-communitative / non-collaborative office-holder who does not fulfill his roles and obligation to serve to the best of his ability as an SG and representative of SPP in SDA if he is acting as a lone-ranger all the time with no regards to the party's interest which he is supposedly to represent. His actions to date under the supposedly SDA SG title are not within proper protocol and unconstitutional.

Hence, we stand firm in our rejection to allow Mr Desmond Lim to represent us under the SPP/SDA banner for the rest of the term 2009-2011 as allowed for in the constitution and would like to forward our elected nominee to stand in as Acting Secretary General instead until the term is up.

As the other component party to SDA,PKMS and SJP must both be fair. It is not a level playing field if Mr Desmond Lim is constantly backed by PKMS and SJP when he has acted unconstitutionally and without following proper protocol.

In the interest of the SDA we must serve our people and country first and not for own self interest in that I am willing to come out of my comfort zone at Potong Pasir to stand in a GRC despite my advanced age in order to expand the opposition.

Let us be reminded that the purpose of setting up SDA is for the alliance with other opposition parties to work together to win more seats and with the view of having a two party system in Singapore one day.

The SDA must have a harmonious working relationship, observing discipline and respect with other member parties decisions. We must move forward and not think of our own little kingdoms.

Yours Sincerely,

Mr Chiam See Tong
SDA Chairman

have been a loooong time supporter of CST.
but my respect for him has somewhat diminished because he should have stepped out of his comfort zone much earlier; and not wait until he is 75/76 yo.

Actually, looking back, can't blame him for not stepping out to GRC earlier. He won in PP SMC from 1984 to 1991, increasing his winning margin from just above 50 to almost 70%. The following GE should have been good time for him to step out. However in between, he was kicked out of SDP and joined SPP. How to take the risk then with a new and smaller party. Even at his own PP GRC, his margin plunged back to just above 50%.

Chiam is no different from the PAP.

Are you saying that Desmond can break any rules and do anything on his own?

Chiam is the ONLY one that can represent SDA in its outside dealings. That is some progressive party Chiam has built after 26 years as an MP. With one foot already in the grave, Chiam intends to bequeath Potong Pasir to his wife - a mini Lee dynasty. His party is rife with discontent and bickering. Latest is Desmond has sent a lawyer's letter to Chiam. SDA intends to do their laundry in full public glare.

I'll wager PAP will take back Potong Pasir in the coming elections.

The biggest fault for this is not people in SPP or SDA but the Registry of Societies. Having gone through the SDA constitution I would say it is very unstable and some parts contradict other parts.

Wonder how can ROS register something with that constitution. Not that they have not registered alliances before.

The only thing they achieved is to split up SPP and SDA. Imagine UMNO being expelled from BN.

Why even bother about SG politics now?

Wait for PAP to split into 2 parties and then you have capable people fighting against each other and it's more exciting.

ROS acts as an officiating registrar, not a judge or referee. As long as no articles contradict the law, the constitution and registration would be passed and whatever contradiction is the party or alliance's own problem.
