</fieldset>Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan yesterday called for greater opposition cooperation, saying the parties have much in common and should not let personality get in the way.

“We're going to work towards us cooperating more. What's the end result, what's the level of cooperation, I couldn't tell you right now,” he said. “But I honestly believe that if we put in effort towards that end, I think we can get somewhere.”

The opposition veteran was speaking on the day his bankruptcy was due to be annulled, leaving him free to stand in elections again.

Dr Chee was declared a bankrupt in 2006 after he failed to pay $500,000 in damages to Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew for defaming them during the 2001 General Election.

In July this year, he offered to pay $30,000 to settle the case. After ESM Goh and Mr Lee accepted, he raised the amount from public donations and the sale of his book Democratically Speaking.

Yesterday, Dr Chee dismissed the theory that both men had accepted his offer in order to split the opposition vote at the next general election.

“I don't know where this theory came from... That to me is basically just an overactive imagination.”

Chee still has a lot of fire in his belly. Despite years of PAP persecution he's still brimming with enthusiasm and ideas about how to take SDP to the next level. It would be a pity to sideline him; he remains a valuable asset to the oppo cause.

Nevertheless, maybe he shouldn't front the party – leave that to the younger members. Stay on as a creative drive behind the party, and help mentor and groom the new guard.

Whatever Chee may have said and done or not done, and whatever you may think of him, he is probably the person who has made pap and LKY most uncomfortable over the years.

And somehow, that's good enough for me.

Actually I have the opposite view. Chee is a hopeless strategist and lacks political nuance but he will be valuable in parliament with the right support. You will be certain that he will address the social, altruistic and human rights issues and certainly won't be quiet.

He should also get rid of the deadwood and mediocre characters who like to call themselves activists and let VW pick the leadership team.

My only concern is that SDP has been thoroughly infiltrated at nearly all levels.

With VW and Chee in parliament, WP would have no choice but lift their game dramatically and stopping doing durian tours and make philosophical statements. WP will however remain popular and has the people's support as the sly old fox can read the ground with or without a secret squirrel doing the damage.

They all are. All countries do it for national security to detect foreign and subversive elements steering the agenda. The WP secret squirrel is case in point. However TCH made the blunder of revealing And using it wrongly . This is where the political ends and national security remit is corrupted.

SDP, NSP and Seow Khee Leng and company is a different story.

All kena decades ago and these aren't your low level chaps. They are holding top appointments and have access to all info within their respective parties. Not that difficult to recruit these people.
