The Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC) explained that it will be looking at more ways to create jobs for seniors.

It explained that they want to help older, low-skilled residents find jobs even after retirement so that they can continue to work and have a source of income.
Over the next 12 to 15 months the central CDC is organising over 30 different projects to help seniors.

Other initiatives include projects to help seniors with mobility issues as well as projects to boost interaction and forge friendships within the community.

Mayor of the Central district, PAP MP Denise Phua explained that the issue of employment for seniors is an issue close to her heart and she has raised several questions in parliaments about how the government can do more to help find jobs for seniors.

Ms Phua pointed out that by 2020, 20% of the population is going to be over 65 years old and in Central Singapore, already 22% of the district is over 65.
The other projects will also aim at getting children youth and adults to particupate more in the community.

She said that the Social Service Office and the Singapore Workforce Development authority are already working to try and get more seniors into jobs but she feels that more can still be done to help seniors continue working.

More details on the 30 different projects will be released at a later date.

It is alarming that so many initiatives are being launched to help seniors find work.

Instead of creating social welfare and allowing out seniors to enjoy their retirement, the elderly in Singapore are being forced to work to make ends meet and have income to survive in retirement.

In other developed nations, the government gives out pensions to the elderly regardless of what jobs they did during their working years.

Universal pension schemes ensure that all seniors will be able to enjoy their silver years without worry about finances.

In Singapore the ‘pension’ scheme is the CPF and only those who had high paying jobs and are wealthy will have enough savings in CPF to tide them over. The low income and poor who do not have enough savings will have no choice but to work in their elderly years just to survive.

Do you think the government should be focusing more on providing for the elderly rather than simply asking them to find jobs?
