It will be quite a misconception to think Chinese today worship Xi JinPing like those in the era of Mao. The life, the thinking, of a typical Chinese, is no different from anyone outside the country. The situation they are in, is no different from Sinkies ie living under authoritarian rule. On the other hand nobody is interested to stage an uprising to change status quo. I've met quite a few kinds. From those that will never set foot in China again to those who ran away thinking it's a sinking ship to those who are burning/dying to go back. So really it's a mixed bag from my experience.

As for similarity with sinkies, I have to agree with you. But I don't think that's ideal either. Sinkies actually have had the luck that lau lee actually steered the ship well and got more than they deserve given their efforts. In neighbouring countries, a person working as hard will have a fraction of the material rewards that a Singaporean has. In China it's the opposite except for the ultra rich. Most of the populace have it worse than they deserve. I'm talking about economic contributions and consequent rewards. There's a great deal of exploitation of the regular populace. Singapore exploited foreign workers to the benefit of the locals. Of course, what I'm saying was with the old guard. Now the new generation is in charge, I have no comment.

I think I'd better state my case because my position may seem confusing and/or contradictory : I'm for Chinese and China the way it was before all the foreigners fucked it up.
