Anyone here have any experience about car coating that is protecting your car paint. I come across here in Bangkok things like Crystal coating and now Ceramic coating.

Anyone knows the pros and cons, any experience what is good and even recommendation . . . want to give my car a goos lasting shine

I am no expert in this field, all I can say is that unless one is a specialist in the coatings industry, the quality of paint that comes with most brand new cars are quite good. There are industry standards for them to pass during production and all of them surpass these standards when they roll out of the factory. As long as one does not incur any dent/scratch in the paint where the bare metal becomes exposed, the protective qualities of most factory paint will last many years and prevent the car's body from corrosion. A coatings technicians can get pretty technical about the layers of coats that make up the car's paint, but barring the technicalities, we as consumers can be assured that any of the manufacturers will specify a coating that will last many years, through extreme weather and wash. Also, prior to purchase, dealers send some models for additional coating reinforcements/corrosion prevention, to ensure further durability. Also, in Singapore's tropical weather, there is no snow, where in temperate countries, the local authorities use salt to melt the ice on the roads, causing rust to the undercarriage of the car, this is not seen here in Singapore.

Cheers!

in thailand, washing car is very cheap.
why do u need to waste your money on car coating?

Yes, respraying a car cost less than SGD300 in Thailand, and those novelty coatings set you back by more and most require you to go back and pay for regular maintenance.

matte coating or finish these days is very popular among the sporty-minded.

Coat protection is different from paint finish or clear coat. A car with coat protection will retain its shine and lustre even after 5 years. Within a year you can tell the difference between a car with coat protection and one without. With no coat protection, the clear coat which is the last year of paintwork will delaminate in harsh weather by year 5 or 6. You also do not have to send it for polishing and restoration to the extent that a car with no coat protection needs to.

As long as you can get some sort of coat protection it will be fine. Just use the base recommendation of the main car distributor.

hey froggy, most important is to handwash your car with fabric or shamwow regularly without scratching your clear coat. some automatic car washing joints use cloth so it's ok once in a while. what scratches the clear coat and removes the shine are dust and dirt accumulated on your car. the air drag and wind on the surface when car is in motion causes dust and dirt to polish off your clear coat over time. if your car already comes with 3 coats of paint and a clear coat as finish, it's good to last at least 10 years with weekly handwashing.

A good hand wash with vacuum and wheel polish costs between 120-160 baht $4.60 - $6.15 I think its not so cheap. I remembered about 8 years ago I too paid like $6 for a wash in Singapore but that's without vacuum.

Thank you. I was thinking additional coating to make the shine last longer.

Agree with you. Any idea which type of coating to use?

i wash my own cars with a shamwow. due to drought, one small pail of water, a few drops of dishwashing soap and shamwow all the way. not a scratch and very clean and water-efficient. too poor to afford a car-washing maid or send them to car washers. need to save money for kopi. moreover, can strike a conversation with next door chiobu who cums out in summer to wash her cars in a bikini.

read up on some of the downsides before you proceed. unless your vehicle is a classic or vintage for collection, or you plan to keep the new vehicle through the decades as a keepsake, beware of the downsides. moreover the harsher tropical environment, pollution, and higher temps in thailand may tip the balance in consideration. all my vehicles except a z350 maintain very good shine after 10 years without nano-glass polymer coating. they are still in their original paint and clear coat. the environment is cooler but the engines are burning hotter under the hood as they age and go through a decade of wear and tear all over.

this section is from a ceramic coating expert....lots of them here as one of the classic and vintage car museums is not too far away (have a thread dedicated to that in the serious zone folder).

What are Some Downsides?

When considering one of these coatings, the pros and cons for a consumer may be different than those of a specialized detailer.

Before you can even apply the coating, the surface has to be 100% free of surface blemishes, which applies to even brand new vehicles. A multi-stage paint correction involves washing the car, claying, buffing, and keeping it pristine while applying the coating. That last step is particularly difficult for anyone who isn’t working in a clean indoor facility.

Nearly all of these coatings use extremely harsh chemicals that when you open the bottle, smell like a nice sampling of jet fuel. After speaking with many detailers who specialize in applying many of these coatings, they mention how they need to take frequent breaks to refrain from going light-headed. These harsh chemicals contain high levels of VOC’s.

Furthermore, when you have a coating that is unlikely to lose it’s bond with the paint, when a paint correction is needed (and believe me, it will be), you lose the coating and all the money that went into it as well.

And lastly, they’re quite expensive. You’re talking about a potential four figure number to get a detailer to do all this work for you.

also, to add, your car body's metal will expand and contract with heat and cold. after coating, there's no guarantee that badly applied coating may crack as the material is not as flexible as metal with metallic-flake paint and resin-like clear coat.
