A former SBS Transit bus driver who caused the death of an elderly pedestrian was fined $6,000 and banned from driving for 42 months on Thursday.

Ong Beng Chew, 46, now a kitchen helper, had admitted to negligently causing the death of 97-year-old Goh Ah Ang at the signalised T-junction along River Valley Road by Kim Yam Road on Feb 11.

The court heard that he saw Madam Goh crossing the road and slowed down his bus.

However, moments later, without ensuring that it was safe to drive off, he accelerated as the traffic lights were green in his favour.
