A mother and daughter have been found dead in inner-city Brisbane, just blocks apart from each other.

The 11-year-old girl suffered a violent and horrific death, found dead in the bathroom of an Auchenflower unit just after 1am.

Police say the girl's 49-year-old mother took her own life after jumping from a crane just blocks away from the Dunmore Terrace apartment where her daughter's body was found.

Detective Acting Superintendent Geoff Sheldon said the child suffered a violent death that has left officers involved traumatised.

"As you can imagine, nothing could be much more horrific than that," he told reporters in Indooroopilly.

"It’s quite a violent death.

"He’s horrendously upset. Any death of a child is horrendous, this is particularly so unfortunately."

He also said the girl's 65-year-old father claims he was asleep in another room at the time of his daughter's death.

The father is "horrendously upset,” Supt. Sheldon said.

"There was a call from concerned people just to go and check on how they were," he said.

"There were some issues in relation to the relationship earlier that night.

"So police have gone around and been confronted with the deceased child."

The girl has an eight-year-old sister who was not in the apartment at the time.

Police are now trying to determine how the child died, and who is responsible.
