Iconic local hawker centre Lau Pa Sat has become the subject of national debate after a Singapore influencer slammed it as a first date venue.
In a series of Instagram Stories, influencer Baby N, who goes by the handle naomiblackk, criticised Lau Pa Sat as a first date venue. She said, "Do I look like a Lau Pa Sat kind of gal? Like I was just so shocked when he said Lau Pa Sat, I thought it was a joke. And the other two options he gave me after that was shit too, and that's when I realised I was going to call it. Like whatever, sayonara."
She also shared a screengrab of the conversation with her date about the location choice and she rejected him as she didn't "feel the alignment I'm looking for". She also told him, "Out of all places you picked that place for a date? Omg."
The image was accompanied by a caption which read, "Anyone who invites me to Lau Pa Sat for the first date is getting cancelled. It's jus [sic] plain rude lol. I don't care how handsome you are. I don't give chances this is not charity [sic]."
her news went viral, naomiblackk on Monday (1 Sep) took to Instagram to address the issue which she described as being "blown way out of proportion by the media". It was meant to be "a joke with some sass about my dating standards", she shared.
"The media screenshots made me look like I'm against hawker culture – which I'm not. I love hawker food but it's not something I eat daily for health reasons. My point was simply that I wouldn't choose Lau Pa Sat as a first date spot."
Naomiblackk added that it's "not about the money, or looking down on anyone" as she has done plenty of simple coffee dates.
She said, "But let's be real, most women want to feel like there's effort on a first date, not like it's a casual afterthought."
