SINGAPORE — Transport Minister S Iswaran, who has been involved in a corruption probe since last July, was seen arriving at the State Courts on Thursday morning (Jan 18).

He was seen together with Senior Counsel Davinder Singh.

This came roughly a week after Education Minister Chan Chun Sing said in reply to a parliamentary question that the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) has wrapped up a "robust and thorough" investigation into Mr Iswaran, and that the matter was being reviewed by the Attorney-General's Chambers.

Mr Iswaran was arrested last July and then released on bail.

It was later revealed that he was assisting CPIB with investigations into a case it had uncovered, though the bureau did not elaborate on the nature of the investigation.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong separately said that he had given CPIB the green light for the investigation, and that he had instructed Mr Iswaran to take a leave of absence until the probe was completed.

Assisting in the investigations as well was Mr Ong Beng Seng, managing director of Hotel Properties Limited and a Malaysian billionaire who gained a high profile for bringing the F1 Grand Prix to Singapore.

Mr Lee told Parliament last August that Mr Iswaran had been interdicted from duty with a reduced pay of S$8,500 a month until further notice.

Mr Iswaran was first elected as an MP in 1997 and was appointed to the Cabinet in 2006.

He held ministerial positions in the Ministry of Communications and Information, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Education.

His latest portfolio was as Minister of Transport and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations at the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

SINGAPORE: Transport Minister S Iswaran was seen arriving at the State Courts on Thursday morning (Jan 18), following a probe by Singapore's anti-graft agency.

The minister, whose political career spans nearly 30 years, was the subject of an investigation by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB). He was arrested on Jul 11 and subsequently released on bail.

Hotel Properties Limited managing director Ong Beng Seng was also arrested on the same day. The billionaire is widely credited with bringing F1 racing to Singapore.

Few details have been released about the CPIB probe into Iswaran. It is not known what he is being investigated for or what his bail quantum was.

Placed on leave of absence

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in August that Iswaran had been interdicted from duty with a reduced pay of S$8,500 a month until further notice.

Iswaran continued to draw the full annual Member of Parliament allowance of S$192,500.

Mr Lee said CPIB alerted him on May 29, and pursued the lead further "on their own volition". Mr Lee was briefed on the findings by the CPIB director on Jul 5.

"He told me that CPIB would need to interview Minister Iswaran to take the investigation further, and sought my concurrence to open a formal investigation," said Mr Lee, who gave his concurrence the next day.

Transport Minister S Iswaran arrived at the State Courts in a car at 8.10am, flanked by his lawyers - Senior Counsel Davinder Singh and Mr Navin Thevar from Davinder Singh Chambers.

Clad in a dark blue suit, he maintained a stoic demeanour and did not respond to questions from members of the media during his walk to the court entrance.

He has cleared security and entered the court building.

About 35 minutes in, Iswaran has finished listening to advice from lawyers and having charges pre-read to him. His lawyer Davinder Singh is speaking to him again, leaning in to whisper.

Iswaran has been in a discussion with his lawyer for about 25 minutes now. A clerk or interpreter is reading his individual charges out to him on an iPad outside the dock.

He has been shifting side to side on his feet, grasping onto his phone clasped behind him and nodding silently at points.

Pappy gahment still allowed this crook to draw full annual Member of Parliament allowance of S$192,500? What a waste of taxpayers money. By doing this, they are effectively saying that they condone corruption.
