KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police on Thursday (Oct 15) said they have summoned opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to assist investigations into a viral list of federal lawmakers allegedly backing his bid to become prime minister.
Anwar on Tuesday met with King Al-Sultan Abdullah in a bid to prove he has a "convincing" parliamentary majority to replace Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and form a government.
Commentary: Why Anwar Ibrahim’s longheld dream of becoming Malaysia PM keeps getting thwarted

He has been asked to give a statement on Friday over complaints filed with the police about a list of 121 members of parliament (MPs) said to be backing his bid, which had gone viral on social media, criminal investigation department director Huzir Mohamed said in a statement.
"To date, a total of 113 police reports have been received," Huzir said of the complaints.
Police did not detail any of the complaints, but Huzir said investigations were guided by provisions under the penal code and a separate multimedia law covering statements that could cause public mischief or harassment.
Punishment for such offences include a jail term of up to two years and fines.
Anwar's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Explainer: The fight for Malaysia's premiership
At a press conference after his meeting with the king on Tuesday, Anwar said he has more than 120 MPs backing his bid. However, the palace later said he only provided the number of lawmakers who he said backed his bid and not their identities.
Anwar's claim to the premiership has triggered a fresh bout of political wrangling in Malaysia, which is grappling with a recent spike in coronavirus cases and its worst recession since the global financial crisis.
Should Anwar succeed in securing the post, it would be the culmination of a 22-year long quest, which included nearly 10 years in jail on sodomy charges he denied. It would also mean Malaysia would have its third prime minister this year.

I know this as a fact because enquirers for this particular seed had come to my table ...this seed is suppose to have been worn by Lord Siva and the best quality comes from Malay peninsula , in my experience Sumatra ...just like the best quality of sea cumber was also sought by ancient chinese from Malay peninsula

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian king on Friday (Oct 16) urged all citizens, especially politicians, to self-reflect together and not allow the country to be pulled back into political turmoil.
This is especially important when the country is faced with multiple problems and a difficult future as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.

In a statement issued by palace comptroller Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah reiterated that Malaysian Members of Parliament (MPs) should show political maturity, and to understand and take to heart the citizens’ concerns, and not neglect their welfare.
He previously espoused a similar message when the Lower House convened in May.
“His Majesty reiterates that politicians should not end their differences in opinion with enmity, but solve problems through consultation and the legal processes enshrined in the Federal Constitution,” the statement said.

The king also decreed that all mosques throughout Malaysia carry out special prayers for the COVID-19 pandemic to be contained effectively and speedily.
“His Majesty also advises all citizens to continue playing their respective roles and be disciplined in adhering to the standard operating procedures and new normal practices to help the authorities, in fighting the COVID-19 spread for personal safety and the country’s welfare,” according to the statement.
The king was reportedly supposed to meet with leaders of Malaysia’s major political parties, after a meeting with opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday. This was after the latter claimed that he had more than 120 MPs backing him to take over as prime minister from incumbent Muhyiddin Yassin.

However, the palace later said Mr Anwar had only provided the number of legislators who he said backed his bid, and not their identities.
Currently, the palace has postponed all appointments due to a two-week conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) instituted in the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, as well as the surrounding Selangor state, which went into effect on Wednesday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Friday (Oct 16) he doubted whether opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had the numbers in parliament to take the premiership and even if he did the country would remain in political deadlock.
Anwar met the king on Tuesday in a bid to prove he has a parliamentary majority to form a government and take over from Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Mahathir, who mentored Anwar and many of the country's top leaders, said even with new leadership Malaysia would remain susceptible to shifting political alliances, particularly by the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) former ruling party.
"So the situation is very uncertain ... either way, there is going to be a situation where there is no government in the country," Mahathir told Reuters in an interview at his office in Kuala Lumpur.
Mahathir, with Anwar's backing, steered the opposition to a historic win in the 2018 election, ending six decades of rule by UMNO with a campaign against corruption.

But his administration collapsed after a bout of in-fighting earlier this year, paving the way for Muhyiddin to take the post in March with the backing of UMNO.
Muhyiddin's seven-month-old government has survived with a two-seat majority in the 222-seat parliament.

Mahathir said he did not support Anwar or Muhyiddin.

The 94-year-old veteran politician and five other federal lawmakers from his new Pejuang party each submitted motions of no confidence in Muhyiddin's leadership on Friday.
Mahathir, whose decision to sack Anwar as his deputy during his first tenure as premier sparked a 20-year feud between them, dismissed his former protege's latest claim of a parliamentary majority.

"This is the kind of thing that Anwar is fond of saying ... Already three times he has claimed to have the support that he would be the correct prime minister, only to find that he has no support," Mahathir said.
Anwar's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Should Anwar succeed in securing the post, it would be the culmination of a 22-year long quest, which included nearly 10 years in jail on sodomy charges he denied. It would also mean Malaysia would have its third prime minister this year.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 — Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said one of his party’s leaders should be made the deputy prime minister as recognition of its influence in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition government.
In the clearest indication yet of the “improved terms” that the party expected in return for its continued support to PN, Tajuddin said it seemed that others were being given precedence over Umno leaders, citing former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali as an example.
“We contributed the highest number of seats in Parliament so maybe the deputy prime minister post should be given to us,” Tajuddin was quoted as saying by The Star today.
Azmin is one of the four “senior ministers” Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin appointed instead of a traditional deputy and the one whom the latter indicated was first among equals.
Tajuddin, a former deputy minister, said it was only right that Umno be given the DPM role as it was the party with the most seats in the coalition.
Tajuddin also complained that members of Azmin’s faction who left PKR for Muhyiddin’s Bersatu have all been given more important portfolios than those entrusted to Umno leaders.
“Even PAS, which is a smaller party compared to Umno, was given important positions. This is causing dissatisfaction among Umno members.
“Umno was given portfolios related to science, innovation and unity where we cannot do much. We should have been given portfolios related to economics, commerce and agriculture instead,” he was quoted further in the same report.
However, he rejected the notion that Umno would work with the rival DAP party in order to form a new government.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim asserted to the Yang diPertuan Agong on Tuesday that he has secured the support of 120 MPs to take over the government, which presumably included some from Umno.
Today, Tajuddin said his party would consider such an alliance only if DAP were to be left out.
“Without DAP, we are willing to talk,” the Prasarana Malaysia chairman said after a compliance check at the Masjid Jamek LRT station here.
Umno is not a member of PN but offers support on matters of supply and confidence to the coalition government and several of its leaders are also members of Muhyiddin’s Cabinet.
After Anwar’s royal audience on Tuesday, Umno released a statement saying it would reconsider its support for PN unless the party received improved terms without specifying.
This morning, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah told Malaysia’s warring politicians to abide by the Federal Constitution to settle their disputes.
The Agong told Malaysia’s political leaders to be reasonable in order to avoid plunging the country into a political crisis at the time when there was already uncertainty and disease in the country.
