KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today claimed majority support of MPs to form a government, and will hold an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong soon.

The PKR president said the majority of those supporting him are “Malay-Muslim MPs”, claiming that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s government is practically over today.

“Thank God I have solid and convincing support from MPs to be presented to the Agong,” he told reporters here.

Anwar says he has numbers to form govt and King to grant him an audience

Anwar Ibrahim says he has a ‘strong majority, close to two-thirds’ to form a new government.

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has announced that he has the numbers to form a new government.

He said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to grant him an audience, though this had to be postponed after the King was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN).

At a press conference today, Anwar said the majority of MPs supporting him are Malay-Muslim MPs.

“The support I have is conclusive. I’m not talking about four, five or six, I’m talking about much more than that,” he said, adding he had a “strong majority”, close to two-thirds.

He said more details will be provided after his audience with the King.

“Strong, formidable and convincing,” he said, when asked about the level of support he has.

Anwar said with the “strong and convincing support, the time for the Muhyiddin Yassin-led government has come to an end”.

He said the sole discretion to dissolve Parliament was with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and that he had spoken to the King over the phone.

The new government, he said, will represent “all people, from Malays and Bumiputeras to others” and hold firm to the principles of the Federal Constitution.
On whether the MPs included those deemed as “traitors” – a reference to those who defected to Perikatan Nasional – he said “I don’t see them in the list”.

Declaring that Muhyiddin’s government has fallen, Anwar urged him to cooperate and ensure a smooth transition.

“He can serve in any appropriate capacity,” he said.

“We want a strong, formidable government. We have to resolve immediate concerns, the economy must be propelled. We need to deal with issues of unemployment, abject poverty and inequality,” he said.

He said there would be “no rush” to call for an election.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today promised to form an inclusive government despite stressing that it would still be one that is predominantly led by Bumiputera and Malay-Muslim leaders.
After claiming to have the support of the majority of Dewan Rakyat to form a government, the PKR president also listed several of the traits that his government will possess if it gets to be formed, which includes being representative but also recognising Malay privileges.
This government will represent all people, with majority Malay-Bumiputera majority and fair representation of all races in this country,” he told reporters.
“We are committed to uphold the principles of the constitution that recognises the position of Islam, the sovereignty of Malay rulers, to uphold the position of Malay language as the official language, as well as the special position of the Malays and Bumiputera as well as give assurance to defend the rights of all races.”

“I promise to form a government with integrity and commitment to address the crisis that befell the country, and put an end to corruption and fight for the wellbeing of the people,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Science and Technology Minister Khairy Jamaluddin today denied the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government has fallen as claimed by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“Just finished the Cabinet meeting. Nothing has fallen or fall down,” Khairy tweeted minutes after Anwar’s surprise announcement shortly after noon.

The Cabinet has its weekly meeting in Putrajaya on Wednesdays.
Khairy included a snapshot of their meeting room at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Anwar had earlier claimed to have “formidable” majority support of MPs to form a new government and even went as far as to say the Muhyiddin administration had fallen.
The Port Dickson MP said he will be requesting an audience soon with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu has confirmed that all of the party’s 11 MPs will support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as the latter announced he has enough MPs to form a government.

In a statement today, the politician known as Mat Sabu said he and his party has given full trust to Anwar as the Pakatan Harapan chairman to form a new government.
“We take note of the announcement made by Anwar, chairman of Pakatan Harapan, and MP for Port Dickson who today has garnered the support of a majority of MPs to form a new government.

“As decided by the previous Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council, Amanah confirms that all of its 11 MPs fully support the leadership of Anwar as the chairman of Pakatan Harapan and give him the confidence to form a new government,” he said in a statement.

Anwar earlier today claimed that he has the majority support of MPs to form a government, and will hold an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong soon.
However, he did not disclose the number of MPs backing him, and will only do so following the meeting with the Agong, who is currently hospitalised.

Sources: Perikatan faces storm in Sarawak as GPS mulls leaving alliance amid dissatisfaction with Bersatu, Umno

Friction has been reported between GPS and its allies in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and Umno at the sidelines of the Sabah state election. — Picture by Firdaus Latif
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Some in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) are considering severing ties with allies in the federal administration, sources said, adding to Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) headache amid continued uncertainty and shifting relationships within the pact’s partners.
Several sources from the state told Malay Mail anonymously that friction has arose between GPS and allies in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Umno at the sidelines of the Sabah state election, most recently over the Petronas deal as well as the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

The sources also pointed out at the insistence of Bersatu and PAS to contest seats in the state as worsening the friction between GPS and PN.
“The two problems have yet to be resolved,” said the source who claimed anonymity, referring to Petronas and MA63.

“More and more Sarawak GPS leaders have openly talked about leaving the federal government if the demands are made.”

Malay Mail understands that the main issue surrounded the delayed payment of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) to the state, despite a High Court decision on March 13 ruled that according to the Federal Constitution, Sabah and Sarawak had the right to impose sales tax on their petroleum products.
Sarawak had imposed a five per cent tax on petroleum products since January 1 last year under the state’s Sales Tax Ordinance 1998.
On June 10, this was confirmed by Sarawak consultative committee on Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) chairman and state Speaker Datuk Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar.
The issue had even resulted in then Petronas chief executive Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin resigning after a disagreement with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin over a plan to pay RM2.9 billion in sales tax to Sarawak, Reuters reported, quoting five sources close to the government and the company.
The matter was only solved last week, with Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz witnessing the handing over of a cheque from Petronas and its subsidiaries in Kuching on September 17.
Several sources were also concerned about delayed negotiations on MA63, which is part and parcel of GPS’ support for the government.
“Until now, there have been no negotiations on MA63 from the federal government. In the previous government, the committee was formed but we don’t know the status of them,” said the source.
The matter was apparently brought to a Cabinet meeting on September 9, in which Muhyiddin said he would form another committee which would be chaired by himself and include the chief ministers of Sarawak and Sabah as members, with federal ministers and other members appointed to the council according to suitability, qualifications, and expertise.
On September 16, The Borneo Post reported that Muhyiddin was expected to make an announcement on the MA63 at the national-level Malaysia Day celebration in Sibu, which could affect Sarawak and Sabah.
But no such announcement was made during the launch of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s election manifesto.
Another source from Sarawak said he was baffled as the committee already exists and has already made inroads with the issues.
“The appointment of new committees is surprising. And of course we have to wait for Sabah to finish their election. And don’t forget Sarawak will also have its state election shortly,” said the source.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, quoted by The Borneo Post, also made the same point, saying the Special Cabinet Committee for MA63 formed under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government consisted of both chief ministers of Sarawak and Sabah as well as leaders from both states, legal experts, academicians, and activists.
According to Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, the new committee would be looking at the Cobbold Commission’s finding on the formation of Malaysia and the Inter-governmental Committee reports as well as the Malaysia Act more systematically and holistically.
Another source close to Sarawak’s PBB also said that state leaders are becoming more annoyed by efforts made by Bersatu, Umno and PAS to contest in the upcoming state election.
The source revealed that several federal PN leaders have started campaigning in Sarawak state seats, and have even demanded to contest those seats.
“Bersatu has established their Sarawak chapter. PAS as well. Umno did not want to be left out.
“Some make demands, they want some seats. All in the name of alliances,” said the source.
The source pointed to a public statement by Wan Junaidi earlier this month urging PAS and Bersatu to skip contesting in Sarawak, as proof of GPS’ increasing annoyance at their West Malaysian allies.
This was after Sarawak PAS Commissioner Jofri Jaraiee and Sarawak Bersatu chairman Jaziri Alkaf Abdillah Suffian’s calls for GPS to allocate seats to the two parties as a sign of cooperation within PN.
Malay Mail is currently seeking comments from GPS, Bersatu and Umno.
Both PN and BN are already at loggerheads during the Sabah state election, after forming Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, a coalition comprising the two pacts and local Sabah Opposition parties that were cobbled together to jointly challenge the ruling Warisan Plus pact.
On September 12, at the end of nominations, it was confirmed that GRS parties will face off against their own allies in nearly a quarter of the 73 seats up for contest, which would split their support against Warisan Plus that avoided overlaps.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim announced on Wednesday (Sep 23) that he has garnered a "strong, formidable, convincing majority" of Members of Parliament (MPs) to form a new government.
The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president said in a press conference that as such, the current government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has fallen.

READ: As Sabah heads to polls on Sep 26, what's at stake for the main political blocs?
"I was supposed to meet the king on Tuesday, 11am but it was postponed because His Majesty was hospitalised," said Mr Anwar, adding that he had spoken with the king on telephone on Tuesday night.
On Tuesday evening, Istana Negara said Malaysian King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had been admitted to the National Heart Institute.

When asked to reveal the list of MPs who are with him, Mr Anwar replied that he would only reveal this after meeting with the king.

"We need a strong, stable government to run this country and save the country," he said.
Previously, Mr Anwar had been tipped to take over from Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who became the country’s seventh prime minister after Pakatan Harapan (PH) defeated Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition in the 2018 general election.

READ: Commentary - Malaysian politics is going through a midlife crisis

Mr Anwar, who was serving a jail term for sodomy, was granted a royal pardon days after PH’s shock victory.
The transition plan from Dr Mahathir to Mr Anwar had been a significant source of tension in PH as the former had repeatedly declined to give a concrete timetable as to when he would step aside for Mr Anwar to take the reins.

Dr Mahathir abruptly resigned in February and defectors from PH then worked with BN to form the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.
Mr Muhyiddin, president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), became the prime minister, after the king met all MPs and found that Mr Muhyiddin likely commanded the support of majority of the lawmakers.
Dr Mahathir and his allies were subsequently removed from Bersatu.
PH politicians have cried foul over PN’s political coup to wrest federal power, although the COVID-19 pandemic and government-instituted movement control order to stem the contagion temporarily abated much of the political feud.
United Malays National Organisation, which has always held the prime minister position before BN’s fall and is now part of the PN government, has repeatedly called for a general election to be held to get rid of the “backdoor government” impression.
Mr Muhyiddin, when campaigning in the ongoing Sabah state election, said a general election can be called if the state coalition he put together wins the Sabah polls on Sep 26.
Mr Anwar is currently facing a lawsuit filed to challenge the legality of a royal pardon he received two years ago, with the dates for case management and trial fixed in 2021.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today welcomed Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to join him and serve in any position that he wishes, should he get to form a government.
In his press conference today, the Opposition Leader said he “has no personal issue” with Muhyiddin, who had ousted Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and brought Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia to form the Perikatan Nasional government where he is now prime minister.

“Tan Sri Muhyiddin, now with this number, has fallen as prime minister. I welcome him to work together. I do not have any personal issues with him,” Anwar told the press here.
“His willingness to work together would be helpful so that changes, power transition happens peacefully and properly, and if he is ready, he can prepare himself to serve in any appropriate position.”
