SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi was trying to "defend the indefensible" over alleged atrocities committed by the country's military against minority Rohingya Muslims.
Asked on the sidelines of a speech he delivered in Singapore on Tuesday (Nov 13) on how Myanmar and Suu Kyi had been dealing with the Rohingya issue, Dr Mahathir said: "It would seem that Aung San Suu Kyi is trying to defend what is indefensible.

"They are actually oppressing these people to the point of killing them, mass killing."

Amnesty strips Aung San Suu Kyi of highest honour

A United Nations report in August detailed a military crackdown with genocidal intent that began in 2017 and drove hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims from Rakhine state into neighbouring Bangladesh.

Myanmar has denied most of the allegations in the report.
Suu Kyi has previously said her civilian government should not bear all responsibility for the crisis because the military retains a powerful political role under the Constitution.
South-East Asian nations will call for those responsible for atrocities in Myanmar's Rakhine state to be held "fully accountable", according to a statement prepared for a regional summit, reflecting a stronger line being taken within the group.

Amnesty International revokes Aung San Suu Kyi’s Ambassador of Conscience Award
Kathleen.F 2018-11-13 NGO

Amnesty International has withdrawn the Ambassador of Conscience Award, its highest award, from Aung San Suu Kyi. The organisation cited the ‘shameful betrayal of the values she once stood for’ as the reason for the withdrawal.
“Today, we are profoundly dismayed that you no longer represent a symbol of hope, courage, and the undying defense of human rights”, said Secretary General of Amnesty International, Kumi Naidoo in a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Suu Kyi, halfway through her term in office and eight years after her release from house arrest, has remained mostly silent and eeriely indifferent to the atrocities being committed to the Muslim minority Rohingya people by the Myanmar military.

“As an Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience, our expectation was that you would continue to use your moral authority to speak out against injustice wherever you saw it, not least within Myanmar itself,” wrote Kumi Naidoo.
As such, Amnesty International says it can no longer justify her continued status as a recipient of their highest honour.
The organisation has in fact been repeatedly vocal and critical of Myanmars de facto leader and her administration about the human rights violations and horrific actions against the Rohingya population who have lived in a state of segregation and discrimination amounting to apartheid. Last year, Myanmar security forces killed thousands of people, tortured men and boys, raped women and girls, and burned hundreds of homes to the ground resulting in hundreds of thousands of Rohingya feeling to Bangladesh for refuge.
In August, the UN called for senior Myanmar military officials to be investigated and prosecuted in international court for the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The UN named the commander in chief of the Tatmadaw (Myanmar military) Min Aung Hlaing and five other commanders.
The international communities – both NGOs and the public – have been surprised by Suu Kyi’s silent over the Rohingya problem. Though the civilian government of Myanmar has no control over the military, Suu Kyi has shielded the security forces by dismissing and downplaying allegations of human rights violations and has even obstructed international investigations into the abuses.
Her administration has labelled the Rohingya as “terrorists” while the state media have continued to publish inflammatory and dehumanizing articles about the Rohingya people, describing them as ‘thorns’ that must be pulled out.
“Her denial of the gravity and scale of the atrocities means there is little prospect of the situation improving for the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya living in limbo in Bangladesh or for the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who remain in Rakhine State. Without acknowledgement of the horrific crimes against the community, it is hard to see how the government can take steps to protect them from future atrocities,” said Amnesty International.

Hundreds of Bangladeshis and other foreign workers usually throng popular destinations like Bukit Bintang, Kota Raya, Jalan Petaling and Jalan Silang in Kuala Lumpur in the weekend which is on Sunday.

However, these places were almost deserted on Sunday, as the Malaysian immigration police began a major crackdown on the undocumented migrants on September 1. The foreign workers are now avoiding public gatherings. Some are staying indoors, while others are passing the nights in areas where they work.

More than 500 undocumented migrants, including several Bangladeshis, were detained on the first day of the crackdown. The number of arrests made yesterday could not be known immediately.

Malaysian Immigration Department Director General Mustafar Ali said the crackdown would continue to free the country of all illegal foreign workers.

Saravana Kumar, a deputy director of the department, said they have planned to arrest and deport around 400,000 illegal immigrants and arrest about 45,000 employers in the first phase of the operation that would continue until the yearend, reports The Wall Street Journal yesterday.

The crackdown began after a government deadline for irregular migrant workers to return to their respective countries expired on August 30. Under an amnesty programme that began two years ago, the government allowed the workers to return home by paying a fine equivalent to Tk 8,000.

During the same period, the Malaysian government announced a rehiring programme.

Migrants and rights activists alleged that several of the undocumented migrants have applied for regularising their immigration status and paid hefty sums to agents and companies appointed by the previous Malaysian government, but they are yet to be regularised.

“Those who have applied for rehiring are also facing arrest. It is totally unfair,” said Amir Hossain, a Bangladeshi, who works in Ampang area of Kuala Lumpur.

He said he had a holiday yesterday but avoided going to Kota Raya area. His nephew was arrested a month ago though he had applied for regularisation and the receipt was with him, he added.

“However, his employer went to the immigration and got him out of detention camp after 25 days,” Amir said.

Mohammad Ali, a Bangladeshi living in Serdang area in Kuala Lumpur, said there are 300 to 400 Bangladeshi workers in the area he works in. More than 50 percent of them do not have their papers updated, he added.

“Nowadays they are not cooking meals at their rooms. They have dinner at hotels and sleep at the project sites to avoid arrest,” Ali told this correspondent over phone yesterday.

Those sleeping in their rooms remain in constant fear of raid by the immigration police, he added.

Ali said he paid an agent RM 6,500 (Tk 1.3 lakh) one year ago, but his immigration documents were not updated yet.

“Why didn't the Malaysian authorities legalise our documents? Why are they now arresting the migrants? Our government is also not asking Malaysia anything about it,” said Ali, an air-condition maintenance supervisor.

Abu Hayat, a migration researcher living in Kuala Lumpur, said the migrants across Malaysia are living in sheer fear and panic. Many migrants are hiding in the rural areas since the incumbent government heightened its operation.

The Bangladesh government should come up to hold an immediate meeting, calling the Malaysian government not to punish those who have applied for regularisation by paying fees, he added.

There are some one million Bangladeshis in Malaysia. Of them, nearly 50 percent are irregular though most of them have applied for regularisation, according to the Bangladesh high commission in Kuala Lumpur.

The high commission officials could not be contacted despite repeated calls to learn if they would negotiate with the Malaysian authorities for not arresting the migrants who have applied for legalisation.

Thousands of protesters have marched through Malaysia's capital to declare support for the embattled government and assert the political dominance of the Malay majority, in a demonstration whose racial overtones sparked concern.

Riot police used water cannons to disperse thousands of red-shirted protesters trying to break through barricades at Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown neighbourhood, shouting slogans denouncing ethnic Chinese community and opposition party leaders.

There were no reports of major injuries.

The demonstration was organised by figures in the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in response to massive street rallies last month that called for prime minister Najib Razak's resignation over a financial scandal.

Malay demonstrators paralysed bustling areas of Kuala Lumpur as they marched through, chanting slogans targeting multi-ethnic Malaysia's Chinese minority.

"Our Malay way of life is under threat. We want to support Malays, Najib, and tell the Chinese to keep their place," said Faisal Nur, 23, a demonstrator from Malaysia's rural north.

The demonstration, and a planned rally later in the day, marked one of the largest public displays of what many Malaysian moderates warn is a trend toward racial and religious intolerance by hardline Malays.

UMNO has controlled Malaysia for 58 years, reserving economic and other advantages for Muslim Malays, saying they were needed to prevent their dominance by the sizeable ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities.

But disgust over alleged UMNO repression and electoral manipulations, as well as frequent corruption scandals, have contributed to a string of election setbacks.

In response, party hardliners have increasingly resorted to racial rhetoric portraying the commercially dominant Chinese as a threat to Malay privilege.

Many Kuala Lumpur businesses run by Chinese — who make up about a quarter of Malaysia's population — were shuttered for the day out of fear of disturbances.

The vast majority of demonstrators in Wednesday's response protests were young ethnic Malay men wearing UMNO's red colours, many blowing loudly on plastic horns. Large numbers were bussed in by organisers from the countryside where ruling party support is strongest.

The rally has been criticised as racially provocative by leading figures in both UMNO and the opposition. Deadly sectarian riots in 1969 are still regularly cited as a underlining the need to maintain racial harmony.

Mr Najib, who was already under fire over huge sums of money missing from a state firm he launched, has been deeply tarnished by a revelation in July that Malaysian investigators had discovered nearly $US700 million in deposits into his personal bank accounts.

His government has called them "political donations" from Middle Eastern sources but has refused to give details.

Mr Najib subsequently sacked his attorney-general and made other personnel moves that critics say have hampered criminal investigations into the funds.

Organisers of the huge two-day demonstrations last month to demand his ouster said more than 200,000 people attended.

Malay organisers said they hoped to attract 80,000 to Wednesday's rally.

Hisham regrets wielding keris, he apologises to all Malaysians

Hishammuddin: I take responsibility for the keris waving

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has admitted that his raising of the keris was among the causes of the Barisan Nasional’s poor performance in the general election.

Apologising to all Malaysians for his action, he said: “If it affected anyone, I cannot run away from the reality of it. I apologise to the non-Malays and the Malays.

“To the non-Malays because of the fear to a symbol which was not my intention. And to the Malays for not being able to uphold their symbol of heritage.”

Describing it as a “sad lesson”, he said as a leader, he must be gracious and accept the consequences because the party came first.

The wielding of the keris was introduced at the Umno Youth assembly in 2005 to symbolise Malay tradition. At the start of the assembly, a procession carrying the keris would proceed to the hall to hand it to the Youth chief, who would then unsheathe and kiss it.

In the 2006 assembly, there was uneasiness among non-Malays when some speakers made racially slanted remarks about using the keris. Things were made worse as the proceedings of the assembly were telecast live.

MCA and several other Barisan component party leaders criticised the use of the keris in such a manner.

However, Hishammuddin had then defended his action, saying the keris was a symbol of Malay culture.

Hishammuddin, who is the Education Minister, however did not want to say if the tradition of kissing the keris would be stopped at future Umno Youth assemblies.

“This is not the forum to discuss it,” he told reporters after chairing a BN Youth central committee meeting at Menara Dato Onn.

Among those present were MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai, MIC Youth chief Datuk S.A. Vigneswaran, and Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

Hishammuddin also said the BN Youth proposed that the coalition’s representatives from Sabah and Sarawak be given more recognition.

“We recognise the role and contribution of Sabah and Sarawak BN (in the general election), and they are now the anchor and backbone of BN,” he added.

He said Barisan leaders in the peninsula could share and learn from the experience of their Sabah and Sarawak counterparts on issues such as religion and racial relations.
