A Chicago couple has been*accused*of*starving their infant daughter to death. Markisha Jones, 19, and Gene Edwards, 22, both from*the suburb of Barrington, were initially arrested on January 8, after paramedics were called to their home and*found their seven month-old daughter, Mya, dead on the dining room table.

The couple replaced the child’s baby formula with cereal and water. The parents called 911 that evening because the emaciated baby had stopped breathing. Mya and her twin sister were both notably “very skinny.”

The Barrington-based duo, who reportedly kept the girl and her twin in the same crib in an unheated dungeon-like basement, dialed 911 on Jan. 8 after their emaciated tot stopped breathing.

Paramedics arrived to find the infant dead on the dining room table, reports the Chicago Tribune. After a 4-month investigation, Cook County Medical Examiner's Office this week declared the girl's death a homicide due to malnutrition from starvation.

It led to cops charging both Edwards and Jones with involuntary manslaughter and felony child endangerment.

Arrested Friday, they are each being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, reports the Tribune. Mya's surviving sister was treated at a hospital before being placed in a foster home.

A Chicago couple has been arrested after police found one of their 7-month-old twin daughters dead in their home and her sister on the brink of the same fate after they reportedly starved the girls by replacing their baby formula with water and cereal.

In January, the parents called 911 after their baby was unresponsive. One of their twin daughters, Mya, had died. According to police, both Mya and her twin sister were “very skinny.”

Upon further investigation, police found that both children were kept in a crib in “an unfinished basement that resembled a dungeon.” The only thing in the cold basement on one of the many freezing days in January in Chicago was a space heater. Meanwhile, the parents stayed in a well heated bedroom upstairs.

An autopsy revealed that 7-month-old Mya died of malnutrition.



Police arrested 19-year-old Markisha Jones and 22-year-old Gene Edwards and charged them with involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. Both are in custody on $250,000 bail.

According to police, the couple admitted they failed to renew their food stamps and take their child to the doctor since the previous summer.

Barrington Police Chief David Dorn said “at this point, I don’t know why they did what they did. Our whole statement throughout this has been how incredibly sad it is.”

Mya’s twin sister was treated at the hospital and Child Services has placed the girl with a foster family.

Considering they were receiving food stamps, and were certainly eligible to continue receiving food stamps and WIC assistance to feed their children, this is just the most inexcusable thing any parents could do.

In less than an hour, he and an alleged accomplice managed to steal 14 tins of milk powder worth $1,049.85 from a supermarket.

Alvin Lim Jun Hong, 28, was given a four-month reporting order (DRO) yesterday after pleading guilty to one count of theft. He also has to perform 200 hours of community service within a year.

Those given DROs have to report to a centre run by the Singapore Prison Service for supervision and counselling.

A second theft charge involving seven tins of milk powder worth $497 was taken into consideration.

Lim and alleged accomplice Poh Jin Yang 26, went to Parkway Parade's Cold Storage supermarket at around 2.40pm on Dec 2, took seven tins of milk powder from the shelves and placed them in a shopping basket belonging to the store.

They took $552.85 worth of milk powder - one tin of Similac Follow-on Intelli-Pro worth $97.15 and six tins of Gain IQ Intelli-Pro, each retailing at $75.95.

After that, the men went to the liquor section of the supermarket, where Lim transferred the loot into a sling bag Poh was carrying. They then left.

According to court documents, Poh sold the seven tins of milk powder for up to $20 each at Sungei Road.

The offence came to light when Mr Kelvin Po Keng Chye, a Cold Storage loss prevention officer, conducted a stock take at around 12.30pm on Dec 3 and realised that several cans of milk powder were missing.

The case involving Poh is still pending and will be mentioned on June 4.

Lim could have been jailed up to three years and fined.
