CCTV cameras have limits to their use

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->
<!-- end left side bar --><!-- story content : start -->
I REFER to Mr Edwin Tong's Forum Online letter last Saturday, 'BirdPark thefts - no word about CCTV suggestion'.
It was unfortunate that Mr Tong's wife lost her wallet. We would like to assure Mr Tong that Jurong BirdPark takes the security of our visitors very seriously and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have always been installed at the entrance of the park.
CCTV cameras have limits to their use, and are not optimal in areas where large crowds obstruct their views. In such areas, we have security personnel on site as human watchfulness plays an essential role.
It is also important that the public remain vigilant and are aware of their belongings. In crowded places, members of the public should be wary of anyone bumping into them, and should check their valuables in such situations to ensure they are secured.
We constantly review our security measures to ensure the safety of our guests. This includes increasing the number of security staff as well as ongoing police patrols on our grounds. We also make regular reminders via our public announcement system to remind visitors to keep an eye on their belongings.
We apologise for the inconvenience and would like to thank Mr Tong for his feedback. We look forward to welcoming him and his family back to Jurong BirdPark soon.

According to US media, the failed car bomb in New York's Times Square appears to have been coordinated by several people in a plot that has international ties.
White House officials characterize the incident Saturday night as attempted terrorism for the first time, dramatically stepping up their description of the intended attack.
Robert Gibbs, White House Spokesman, said, "I think anybody who has the type of material that they had in a car in Times Square, I would say that that was intended to terrorize, absolutely, and I would say that whoever did that would be categorized as a terrorist, yes."

New York police interviewed the owner of the vehicle Monday, but he is not considered a suspect. Officials declined to say why.
The investigation was also trying to identify a thin, white man in his 40's who was caught on video near the vehicle.
The surveillance video shows the man slipping down a street and taking off his shirt, revealing another underneath.
In the same clip, he looks back in the direction of the smoking vehicle and puts the first shirt in a bag.
Though the identity of the would-be bomber has eluded... investigators, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder vows those responsible would be arrested.
The Pakistani Taliban are claiming responsibility for the car bomb in three videos that surfaced after the weekend scare.
New York officials say police have no evidence to support those claims.
