The Sea m&d Festival on Xiushan island in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, has become an instant hot topic after 30 Miss China Tourism Cultural World contestants in bikinis visited the festival and got down in the m&d on July 21. Predictably, while many netizens enjoyed the photos, others were on their moral high horse concerning the festival, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.
The m&d-themed festival opened in June, but the visit from the bikini girls has certainly ensured that people know about it.
The young women in bikinis engaged in a series of promotional activities for the Sea m&d Festival, including muddy tug of war, muddy relay and muddy football. The photos which got the most views however were those of the young women wallowing like hippos, m&d wrestling and smearing each other with silty clay.
Some netizens expressed concern that the meaning and image of the festival has gone awry and become pornographic.
The festival is jointly organized by the Committee of the China Ocean Cultural Festival, the Zhejiang Communist Youth League and the Zhoushan Association of Physical Exercise.
In response to criticism, the organizers denied using cynical publicity tactics and reminded visitors to appreciate the benefits to health and well-being of playing in m&d instead of just looking at girls in bikinis.
