The NHS system is not free. The NZ system is not free. Nothing is ever FREE. Someone is paying the bills and it is never the government. It is always the taxpayer.

In NZ, company tax is 30%. Personal taxes are 33%. The money is taken away up front and it is then poured into a bottomless pit. The net result is a healthcare system so wasteful and inefficient that I cannot depend on it at all.

The consequence of the situation is that after paying hefty taxes, I still have to purchase health insurance at the cost of NZD380 per month (it goes up annually and will be more than $400 next year) or $4560 per year in order to be assured of decent care should something catastrophic happen.

I've said this before and I'll keep saying it over and over again... that Singaporeans should count their blessings. You don't know how lucky you are. Reality will sink in very quickly if you guys do something idiotic like voting the PAP out of office. It will be too late to regret when the country starts falling apart under some looney who takes over.

As Uncle Leong said in a couple of his posts on hospitals, ZERO increase in he number of hospital beds in the past ten years until earlier this year.
The projected number of increased hospital beds by Minister Son of a Gan includes those for hospices etc.

not just KTPH, i had a family member at TTSH A&E on Thursday early evening, after the review, admission was required. The ward/bed was only available on Friday late afternoon!!! luckily, no corridor BUT i saw some A&E patients being "warded" at their make-shift ward which looked like some SARS emergency response ops area, full of shower hose like your home toilet overhead shower head kind....

I have to disagree because in the old days we had a younger & healthier population. I'm comparing to when Spore only had a population of 2.5 to 3 million about half of what there is today. With less stress & a younger population the demands on our health care system was lower.

You really have to wonder about the stupidity of the PAP gov't. How can you double the population & expect the same number of hospitals to cope Only have to look at the overburdened poly clinics & the 4 month waiting time time to see a specialist, to know that there is a problem with the system.

It's exactly the same in NZ without any surge in the overall population. Exorbitant taxes are being paid by us to fund the health system but because of the gross inadequacy of public health care, I have to take out ADDITIONAL private medical insurance in order to have a hope in hell of surviving a serious condition.

The public hospitals continue to stumble from one funding crisis to the next. As a result the waiting lists lengthen and increasing numbers of Kiwis are being advised that they no longer qualify for elective surgery in a public hospital and are being removed from waiting lists.

The Ministry of Health advised (April 2006), that for those still on waiting lists in the public system:

• Over 19,000 patients were waiting for more than 6 months for a first specialist appointment, and
• Over 8,000 patients were waiting more than 6 months for treatment.

In 2005 an estimated 260,000 surgical procedures were paid by medical insurers. They paid out $630,000,000 in claim refunds for clients. These clients did not have to wait, and could choose the Surgeon and Hospital, and the time for their treatment.

While Medical Insurance costs continue to increase each year reflecting an underlying medical inflation of 7-9%, due to increasing specialist, equipment and hospital costs, more Kiwis are seeking medical insurance to provide surety. The biggest increase is in the demand for hospital plans and a move from the more expensive comprehensive plans.

We can't resolve the situation where the increase of beds is not proportional to the increase in population in the short term.What we can do is to have public hospitals seriously reconsider engaging in medical tourism if the trade off is less beds for the residents. You are right, the problem is with gov't policies. To resolve the problems we will need changes at the top. With the current anger at how things are there is a good chance of such a change.

All systems have their pros and cons. The idea that a system can be created where anyone who needs treatment can just saunter to a hospital to be treated like a VIP without having to pay a cent is the stuff of dreams. It will never happen anywhere in the world.

Remember some years ago, just to jolt your memory a bit, one 'MEE SIAM MAI HUM', opening some pesta sukan, ostracised SINgaporeans for leading an unhealthy life style & not exercising.......not much later, was struck with CANCER & received a remission from that dreaded disease by divine providence & still have not repented....many at that time, said "obi good, obi good, obi good!!!"
