DHAKA - Bangladesh's president was flown to Singapore on an air ambulance last night for treatment.
President Zillur Rahman was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on Saturday night with respiratory problems, his son Nazmul Hasan, MP, told The Daily Star yesterday.
The president's Press Secretary, AKM Nesar Uddin Bhuiyan, told The Daily Star that an air ambulance carrying the president and a few of his family members and staff left for Singapore from Shahjalal International Airport at 10:30 pm last night.
Bangabhaban official sources said that the 83-years-old president was on respiratory support while boarding the aircraft.
Two specialised physicians were flown in from Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore, last night, to assess if the president could be flown off in his condition.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had visited the ailing president at CMH around noon yesterday.
She had asked physicians about his health and treatment and directed them to take appropriate care of the head of the state.
Rahman had been suffering from fever since Saturday morning and was taken to CMH after he developed breathing problems.
