"Avatar's" overseas cume of $906.2 million significantly outpaces comparable domestic action, more than double its $429 million domestic take in the U.S. and Canada.

In addition, director James Cameron's mega-budget, 3D epic is within sight of the $1.242 billion overseas boxoffice record established by the director's 1997 smash "Titanic."

Distributor 20th Century Fox said that at "Avatar's" current torrid overseas boxoffice pace, the film will "cross the $1 billion (offshore) barrier by Thursday or Friday of this week, with 'Titanic's' 13-year record cume in its sights."

Worldwide, the boxoffice total for James Cameron's sci-fi epic is now $1.335 billion, $508 million behind the $1.843 billion all-time worldwide record set by "Titanic."

Maintaining a blazing pace on the overseas circuit -- grossing an average of nearly $28 million per day from last Monday through Wednesday, the slowest days of the week -- "Avatar" added a record-setting opening week in China to its offshore boxoffice luster.

An opening seven-day surge there generated a whopping $40.2 million from 2,474 screens, which Fox called the market's biggest opening-week gross ever. The Saturday tally in China came to $8.3 million, a single-day market record.

In France, the latest round realized $11.7 million from 1,111 sites, with the market cume topping the $100 million mark ($110.5 million), the first offshore territory to do so. Germany generated $9.9 million from 994 screens for a cume of $73.4 million.

The U.K. cume stands at $66.8 million thanks to a $7.5 million weekend from 470 locations. (Severe winter weather in the U.K. inhibited boxoffice generally in the market.) Other big market cumes include Australia ($57.8 million), Russia ($69.5 million), Spain ($60 million), South Korea ($54.5 million) and Japan ($50.8 million). An Italy opening begins Friday.

Because of its uniquely must-see-in-digital-3D factor, "Avatar" is drawing the vast majority of its overseas boxoffice from 3D venues, which charge higher admission prices. Through its third weekend, per Fox, conventional 2D sites generated 36% of the film's overseas gross total, while 3D locations produced a full 64%.

By way of comparison, 2009's biggest overseas grosser, Fox's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," which was also released in 3D, drew only 41% of its $691.2 million offshore take from 3D venues.

"Up," the Pixar 3D animation feature and Disney's top-grossing release of 2009, realized 44% of its $430 million overseas cume from 3D venues vs. 56% derived from 2D sites. ("Up" is still playing in Japan, where the market cume through the weekend stands at $46.6 million.)

Imax Corp. reported that "Avatar" grossed $4.6 million from overseas Imax theaters on the weekend, up 13% from the prior round. The company described action at its China sites as "staggering and record-breaking. In fact, in a great part due to China, Saturday was the single biggest international day in Imax history with $1.65 million" in grosses.

There are a total of 179 Imax venues playing "Avatar" in the U.S. and Canada and another 82 sites overseas.

Worldwide cume for "Avatar" from Imax venues is about $91 million as of Sunday night, with the $100 million mark to be passed this week, per Imax. This would "be a first for us for a Hollywood feature."

Warner Bros.' release of "Sherlock Holmes," director Guy Ritchie's version of the Arthur Conan Doyle's detective fiction, finished second on the weekend with $25.7 million derived from 5,300 screens in 44 territories. The film, co-starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, has grossed $295.2 million worldwide with $130 million originating offshore.

Finishing third on the weekend was Fox's family-oriented "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which lured $22 million from 6,226 screens in 57 territories for an overseas cume of $136.3 million and a worldwide total of $314.5 million. A Brazil opening provided an eye-popping $5.5 million (including previews) from 375 screens.

No. 4 was Sony's romantic comedy "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" which showed boxoffice traction overseas with an $8.4 million weekend from 1,885 screens in 18 markets for an early foreign cume of $15.6 million. The Hugh Grant-Sarah Jessica Parker vehicle opened in at least 10 territories, with a No. 2 bow in Germany leading the pack ($2.25 million from 500 sites).

Finishing fifth was Universal's "It's Complicated," writer-director Nancy Meyers' romantic comedy with Meryl Streep, which generated $8 million from 1,700 situations in 17 markets, raising its overseas take to $23.4 million and its worldwide total to $99.8 million. A strong Australia opening provided $3.3 million from 240 sites.

Making a big Italy splash was Warner Bros.' local-language production "Io, loro e Lara" (I, They and Lara), director Carlo Verdone's ensemble comedy about a missionary priest and his family. The film opened at No. 1 in the market, grossing $5.8 million from 662 screens on the weekend. The full opening frame produced $11 million.

Less impressive was the Germany opening of "13 Semester," Fox's local-language romantic comedy from director Frieder Wittch, which drew $599,000 from 151 screens and a No. 8 market ranking.

Opening in four territories -- including the U.K., where it finished at No. 5 -- was Mandate International's "Daybreakers," a horror/sci-fi title starring Ethan Hawke, which drew an estimated $2.2 million from a total of 640 screens.

In France, newcomer "Le Siffleur" (The Whistler), director Philipp Lefebvre's crime caper set in Cannes, openedat No. 2 in the market with an estimated $1.2 million drawn from 275 screens.

Other international cumes: Paramount's "The Lovely Bones," $5.4 million (from Australia and New Zealand only); "Disney's A Christmas Carol," $185.7 million; Universal's "Couples Retreat," $55 million; Sony's "2012," $600.7 million; EuropaCorp. Distribution's "Arthur et la vengeance de Maltazard," $32.5 million (over six rounds, France only); Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," $85.8 million; La Pacte's "Rec 2," $3.5 million (over three rounds, France only); Fox's "Fantastic Mr. Fox," $17.2 million; Universal's "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant," $13.3 million; Sony's "Zombieland," $24.3 million; Disney's "Surrogates," $73 million; Universal's "Public Enemies," $117 million; and Paramount's "Celda 221," $14.8 million from Spain only.

Weekend Report: ‘Avatar’ Obtains More Records in Fourth Outing
by Brandon Gray
Avatar

January 11, 2010

The holidays are over, but Avatar was relatively unphased, defying "the bigger they are, the harder they fall" adage. Over the weekend, Avatar generated $50.3 million, breaking the record for biggest fourth weekend gross previously held by Titanic's $28.7 million. It was down just 27 percent, giving it the best hold among nationwide releases. Its IMAX venues alone were down 14 percent, accounting for an estimated $7.5 million of the weekend.

Avatar raged past the $400 million mark in a mere 23 days, the second-fastest to the mark behind only The Dark Knight. Its $430.8 million tally by day 24 made it the top-grossing movie from 2009, beating Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, as well as the seventh-highest grossing picture of all time, surpassing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. On Monday, Avatar will top Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, to claim fifth place. In terms of attendance, though, Avatar would likely barely make the Top 100, which is still sensational. That's due in part to the ticket price premium of the picture's 3D presentations. 3D has made up $335.4 million or 78 percent of the total.

Internationally, Avatar also shattered the fourth week record, pulling in $150.5 million from 110 countries (essentially everywhere but Italy, where it opens Jan. 15). That was a bit more than the previous week, bolstered by its debut in China, where it made $41.4 million since Monday, setting records for opening week and single day there. Its foreign total shot up to $910.8 million mark, led by France ($101.4 million), Russia ($78.4 million and the country's all time No. 1 gross), Germany ($73.4 million), the United Kingdom ($67.1 million), Spain ($60.1 million and another all time No. 1) and Australia ($57.9 million, yet another all time No. 1). Throw in the domestic gross and Avatar's worldwide tally stood at $1.34 billion, marching ever closer to Titanic's $1.84 billion all time benchmark.

Back to domestic, while Avatar was down 27 percent, Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel had more typical 55 and 53 percent drops, respectively. Sherlock grossed $16.6 million, lifting its total to $165.2 million in 17 days, while Alvin made $16.6 million, raising its tally to $178.5 million in 19 days. Both pictures cracked the Top Ten of highest-grossing movies never to reach No. 1 on a weekend: Alvin ranks sixth, while Sherlock ranks tenth.

Three pictures opened nationwide but packed relatively little bite. Daybreakers harvested $15.1 million at 2,523 sites, ranking middle of the pack among vampire opening weekends and making less than 30 Days of Night and the Underworld series among similar movies. More modest, Leap Year drew $9.2 million at 2,511 sites, and Youth in Revolt nabbed $6.9 million at 1,873 sites.

Bloody hell, I just went to watch this movie and what a waste of my $$$. Sure, the CGI was really good and you sort of feel you are watching while in the movie itself. But the story is just a ripoff from so many places.

It stole ideas from Dances with Wolves, Matrix and even from the manga One Piece (Remember Sky People and mountains in the sky, islands in the sky in the manga). The only original thing it has is that it is set on an alien world.

It is only worth watching in 3D for the visual effects. If you are watching it on a normal screen, my advice is you can get more for your $$$ elsewhere.

avatar is a scifi movie advertise as cutting edge computer CGI, not brillant storyline and dialogue. If you want to see excellent story, go and see a drama movie, if you have to see action, go and see an action movie. Dun go to an CG sci fi movie and expect twist and original story, for an scifi show, it got pretty good story. Transformer 2, terminator salvation, their story are more original, is it better story than avatar?

Problem is that the movie was overhyped, thus I went with great expectations, hoping to see a movie that will be groundbreaking. The only thing I was impressed with were the CGI but we have already got plenty of that in computer games, animation movies and other CGI-dependent movies.

I really liked the 3D effects and beautiful CGI but it did not leave me with the wow factor I get after watching an epic movie. Star Wars (the early series), Alien, Jaws, Terminator, The Shawshank Redemption, LOTR, Matrix, Sixth Sense (even Chinese ones like Infernal Affairs) all did that for me. I do not know how to describe the feeling but you sort of feel like the movie has forever changed your life somehow.

If you are in love with the movie, it is fine with me. The only thing I disagree with is that having pretty CGI is the only thing that makes a wonderful movie. For me, the basic thing a great movie must have is a good storyline, the rest of the stuff are important as well but they serve as supporting factors. That is the reason I can't rate this movie as one of the greatest movie ever.

story of avatar is pretty good, i think.

alien? story sucks - she destroy the whole fxxking ship, but the alien hiding in the shuttle, she is going to take. like what is the odds?

LOTR? story sucks - oh my gay friend going to die, oh i got to save my gay friend, take years to say goodbye. stupid overhype trash.

Shawshank redemption - so boring i went to sleep.

Jaws? again boring as hell.

six sense? never heard of it.

please dun compare avatar with those trashes.

Avatar wins globe, best film drama and best director

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- "The Hangover" and "Avatar" won the Golden Globe Awards for best comedy and drama film respectively at a ceremony in Los Angeles Sunday night.

James Cameron also picked up the prize for best director for his work on "Avatar."

"I'm going to try to make this as brief as I can because, frankly, I have to pee something fierce," Cameron quipped upon accepting his award. "I'm actually not well-prepared because, frankly, I thought ('The Hurt Locker' director) Kathryn Bigelow was going to get this. So I'm kind of winging it here. And she richly deserves it. But make no mistake, I'm very grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association."

Bigelow is Cameron's ex-wife.

Robert Downey Jr. won the award for best actor in a comedy or musical film for playing the titular sleuth in "Sherlock Holmes."

"If you start playing violins, I will tear this joint apart," the star joked, referring to the music used to tell actors when to wrap up their acceptance speeches.

"First of all, I'd like to thank (my wife and producer) Susan Downey for telling me Matt Damon was going to win, so don't bother to prepare a speech. That was at about 10 a.m. I don't have anybody to thank," he deadpanned. "I'm sorry. Everybody's been so gratuitous, it was a collaboration. We all did this together. I'm certainly not going to thank Warner Bros. ... They needed me. 'Avatar' was going to take us to the cleaners. If they didn't have me, they didn't have a shot. What am I going to do? Thank (producer) Joel Silver? The guy who's only re-started my career 12 times since I began 25 years ago? ... I really don't want to thank my wife because I could be bussing tables at the Daily Grill right now if not for her. ... (Director) Guy Ritchie had a great vision for this film and a lot of great people came together and we worked our (expletive) off and it's just a privilege."

Sandra Bullock took home the Globe for best actress in a drama film for her role as the plucky adoptive mother of a football player in "The Blind Side."

"Do I need to thank whoever bought this for me? Kidding. Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press Association. After all these years, you let me step over to the other side (from comedy). Thank you for putting me in this extraordinary category with these amazing women I get to share this night with."

Austria's Christoph Waltz won the award for best supporting actor for his portrayal of a merciless Nazi officer in Quentin Tarantino's blood-soaked World War II picture "Inglourious Basterds."

"Thank you very, very much, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association," Waltz said. "A year and a half ago, I was exposed to the gravitational forces of Quentin Tarantino and he took my modest little world and with the power of his talent and his words and his vision, he flung it into his orbit -- a dizzying experience."

Jeff Bridges earned the gong for best actor in a drama film for "Crazy Heart," "Up in the Air" won the award for best screenplay, "Up" was named best animated film and "The White Ribbon" took the trophy for best foreign film.

Taiwan man dies after watching Avatar
January 19, 2010,
A 42-year-old Taiwanese man with a history of high blood pressure has died of a stroke likely triggered by over-excitement from watching the blockbuster Avatar in 3D, a doctor says.
The man, identified only by his surname Kuo, started to feel unwell during the screening earlier this month in the northern city of Hsinchu and was taken to hospital.
Kuo, who suffered from hypertension, was unconscious when he arrived at the Nan Men General Hospital and a scan showed that his brain was haemorrhaging, emergency room doctor Peng Chin-chih said on Tuesday.
"It's likely that the over-excitement from watching the movie triggered his symptoms," he told AFP.
Kuo died 11 days later from the brain haemorrhage, and the China Times newspaper said it was the first death linked to watching James Cameron's science-fiction epic Avatar.
Film blogging sites have reported complaints of headaches, dizziness, nausea and blurry eyesight from viewers of Avatar and other movies rich in 3D imagery.

Damn the communist pigs, they claim the 2d not selling well, affecting the 3d imax tickets, so they going to stop all the cinema showing the 2d. In actual fact, 3d imax are mostly in the big city, where the people are rich and less likely to take the message of the movie, 2d are in the poorer area. For reason i cannot fathom, they prevent their poor to see avatar in 2d, but fxxking pirate dvd are everywhere in china. In this time and age, you cannot prevent them from wanting to see it.

PRC poor think they are NAVI, land stolen by PRC army/police.

Some said the movie story is not good, well, even the chinaman think the story is great, what more can i say.

taiwan man dies after watching avatar
january 19, 2010,
a 42-year-old taiwanese man with a history of high blood pressure has died of a stroke likely triggered by over-excitement from watching the blockbuster avatar in 3d, a doctor says.

China Pulling 2D Version of 'Avatar' Amid Censorship Allegations

Saturday marks the end of 2D screenings of the science fiction epic, which dramatizes the forced eviction of a people, a politically sensitive subject in China.

Chinese censors have ordered the 2D version of "Avatar" pulled from screens across the country, apparently to reduce competition for the homegrown film industry ahead of the nation's biggest holiday season.

The 3D and IMAX versions of James Cameron's global hit will continue their run into February. But Saturday marks the end of 2D screenings of the science fiction epic, which also dramatizes the forced eviction of a people -- a politically sensitive subject in China.

China Film Group, the state-run domestic distributor of the Hollywood blockbuster, has ordered the move after receiving instructions from China's censors. Repeated calls to the distributor's spokesman Tuesday went unanswered.

Reportedly, part of the reason is to reduce competition for China's homegrown films, like the state-backed biopic of Confucius, the ancient Chinese philosopher, starring Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun-fat, which opens this Thursday.

The Beijing Youth Daily on Tuesday quoted UME International Cineplex assistant manager Liu Hui confirming the pullout at theaters in the capital. She said it won't affect the cinema's revenues.
"In UME, the 3D and Imax version make up 90 percent of our box-office income, so it won't affect the majority of viewers. With the pullout of the 2D version, movies like 'Confucius' will gain some room for showing," she said.

Next month is Lunar New Year, the nation's biggest holiday. With a week of vacation or more, many Chinese are expected to flock to the country's theaters. China boasts about a dozen IMAX screens, another 800 3D screens and an estimated 4,500 regular screens. It's unclear how many 2D screens Avatar was playing on.

China remains highly protective of its domestic film industry, allowing only 20 foreign films into the Chinese market each year. Cameron, who visited Beijing in December as part of "Avatar's" press tour, had called on China to end that restriction, which is also being challenged by the World Trade Organization.

There is also sensitivity to the movie's plot, which revolves around the forced evictions of the alien Na'vi race by humans -- a story line that some have said draws unflattering comparisons to China's own, often brutal removal of millions of residents to make way for property developers.

Columnist Huang Hung penned a commentary in the official English-language China Daily, saying the film had struck a chord with Chinese viewers.

"All the forced removal of old neighborhoods in China makes us the only earthlings today who can really feel the pain of the Na'vi," she wrote.

"Avatar" is already the biggest box-office success in China, pulling in more than 300 million yuan ($44.1 million) as of Jan 12. It quickly surpassed last year's "2012" and "Transformers 3."

China's box office is still small compared with North America's, but the country is a growing marketplace for Hollywood. Revenues surged from 920 million yuan in 2003 to 4.3 billion yuan ($630 million) in 2008 -- compared to $9.8 billion in the U.S. in the same year, according to government statistics.

Tickets for the 2D version cost 30 to 40 yuan ($4.40 to $6), while 3D tickets are pricier at 60 to 80 yuan ($9 to $12). An IMAX ticket, at 130 to 150 yuan ($19 to $22), is a very expensive treat for movie-goers in China.

In theaters across the financial metropolis of Shanghai, word of the decision spread quickly.
"It's not just our theater. The 2D 'Avatar' is going to be stopped everywhere," said a ticket sales manager at Nanjing Peace Theater who refused to give his name because he had not been authorized to speak to media.

"If you want to see it, seize the opportunity now -- even for 3D! We just listen to the command from the relevant authority, although we will lose some ticket sales for sure," he said.

Just got home from seeing it in 3D, not Imax like I planned but still was good. I did find that my glasses might have messed with the 3D, but I am not sure. I also was not sure if I was seeing the 3D the way it's suppose to be seen because I have never watched anything in 3D before let alone this new 3D tech.
Besides that, it was a beautiful and amazing movie.
