the famous coca restaurant is being forced to close down for good.

Well, it will come to a day whereby only the rich can eat at shopping centre. All others will be relegated to food stores beside busy street.

Coca restaurant, one of Singapore’s most famous steamboat eatery, has closed down on Feb. 17 after 17 years of operation at the fourth floor of Takashimaya Shopping Centre.

The reason for shutting down?

According to the restaurant, they are not renewing its lease as rental is being increased by over 50 percent.

This has caused a lot of unhappiness among food-crazy Singaporeans.

And angry enough for them to dwell on what is wrong with Singapore’s rentier capitalism.

One angry Singaporean, Nina Beh, said: “Takashimaya is a greedy pig. They have deprived the population of steamboat.”
Although no one is heading to Hong Lim Park over this matter just yet, things might be coming to a head.

Another socialist-minded local, Bu Gong Ping, said: “Closing down a restaurant will only bring hardship to the workers. What have they done to deserve this? Why is it unacceptable for Takashimaya to just make slightly less profits?”

chong qing hou kuo at tanglin shopping centre with its dual soup base of chicken soup and mala. it's buffet ++;

another version would be at vivocity bei san chuan which is at an economical price of less than $18/px

or u can head down to golden mile hainanese steamboat in charcoal style. this one per set of 2 persons would be about $20 but servings are very miserable. while u r there, do order the pak chok kai white chicken.

COCOA would have no problem setting up another restaurant. No problem. Their brand is there, quality is there.

My only guess is that TAKASHIYMA is trying to vacate COCOA out so that newer theme restaurant can come in. That why they are raising the rental to such a high amount.

cocoa have a branch in rws right? so $$ not an issue for them. more like landlord wanted another new establishment in so raise the rental to unsutainable level to chase out cocoa.

RIP... and I thought that only the provision shops, barber shops, bakeries in the heartlands are affected by rent hikes.

Some years ago, even the library at Ngee Ann City was forced to close down due to exorbitant rent.

I won't be surprised if another GLC-linked shop/restaurant/food court takes its place.

This is yet another symptom of inflation gone mad in Singapore.

The PAP govt is irresponsible and wicked. Having 6.9 million population will exacerbate the problem.

gahmen's thinking that only the super rich PRCs cum here to settle down for good and so it's an opportunity hard to miss to milk them dry. how these super prcs become rich is becos of their ability to milk lesser peasants. so if the gahmen milk them, these bunch of notorious shrewd prcs would in turn milk the peasants. in the end, the peasants are at the lowest rung of the food chain :(

If Kong Hee gets convicted, Suntec will become a ghost town. Church attendance will drop and CHC will have to sell its stake in Suntec City.

Already there is no more Carrefour. There's not really a lot of reason to go to Suntec these days, unless you want to go for those clusterfuck tech product exhibitions.
