EVs make sense only if the grid is powered by renewable energy. Otherwise, it's still fossil fuel depedent, despite having minimal emissions at point of use. In the US, Big Oil is king, hence the slow transition to renewables.

The greater impact to the environment comes from the disposal of batteries: EV batteries are not really designed to be recycle, and waste management is a looming problem as EV population increases.

Still better than ICE car

Juat wait within 5 years for battery tech to improve sufficiently for fast charging or battery replacement tech to catch up like on NIO's and price of battery to fall. Meanwhile buy a used car if you need one.

I don't trust all these sustainability crap. Depopulation will take care of global warming.

All these sustainability things is just more opportunity for corporates to screw you and me.

Look at the latest one .... Carbon free air travel from changi airport.... Who pays? Not airlines, not aviation fuel companies, but you , the stupid consumer.

You're right. EVs are the new mobile phones - on wheels.

That's why I'm betting on Huawei, because they're the only company that spans the entire IT spectrum:

Chips - mobile phones - 5/6G network equipment - Harmony OS ecosystem - EV - EV chargers - AI technology

No other company comes close: not Tesla, not BYD, not Toyota.

Watch this space.

  • Huawei on Tuesday confirmed it is working with at least four traditional automakers in China on developing new car brands.
  • That followed news over the weekend that Huawei is launching a joint venture with Changan Automobile for car technology.
  • Chinese automakers with products “lacking in the tech necessary to compete seem more than happy to use Huawei’s [tech] to fill the voids,” said Tu Le, founder of Beijing-based advisory firm Sino Auto Insights.

Battery technology is all chemistry of the 108+ elements of the periodic table. It is a mature science and we almost know all about how chemical energy comes from chemical reactions. There will not be any possible improvement to battery technology like "instant" recharging. You can recharge extremely fast if you input huge power, either 22kV or 1000 Amp; pray battery don't explode.

Yes! EV will work provided you allow EVs to use newly developed nuclear battery that need no charging for 50 years!

Huawei are not into making cars. They outsource that to third parties.
If anything, it's all about the software and self driving capability. And currently Tesla is way ahead in charging infrastructure and software. Plus lead time.
The Japanese were the first with EV's but it was half hearted attempt or they started way too early before battery technology was available to make it feasible. Nissan Leaf is a good example.

Hydrogen fuel cell is another scam+hype+lies. It is OK provided you can get free hydrogen. You need energy to get hydrogen so won't solve anything.
Current method if it work, can bring cost down to below usd2 per kg using chemistry. It's being tested now.

I don't keep up with details so can't comment. From intuition, I think 2 kg of hydrogen is "hell-a-lot-of-power"! - think your LPG bottle gas.

There are hypes all around. IBM even claim they already have a quantum computer and tested. But I never trust "what" they have tested.

So u get free electricity ah? Nothing is free la, regardless hydrogen or pure electric.

People say conversion rate for hydrogen is low, but it will improve, as with all technology.

At least hydrogen filling up take seconds only, unlike EV charging taking minutes

EV charging can be quick if utilise NIO battery replacement tech.

Currently using too much power to produce hydrogen. But chemical method may be the development that will Bring cost down.

The current battery technology is already good enough for EV usage on a massive scale. BYD has installed 760k charging point in China. Tesla has installed 10k. It is whether you have enough muscle to roll out the infrastructure.

Battery swaps are an interim measure to counter long charging times. 3-5 min per swab, in and out of station. Faster than filling up with petrol.

EV manufacturer Nio opens 30th European battery swap station

Nio Power Swap Station

Nio, which is planning to bring its cars and electric vehicle battery swap technology to the UK, has reached the milestone of opening 30 Power Swap Stations across five European markets.

The EV manufacturer’s USP is that the stations enable drivers to exchange their depleted battery for a fully-charged one in less than five minutes.
While in August it confirmed it would not launch in the UK until it has developed the infrastructure to offer battery swaps here, it has just opened two PSSs in Malmo and Arlandastad, Sweden.

These are able to perform up to 408 swaps per day and store up to 21 batteries.

Including China, Nio now has 2,217 PSSs spread across six markets, which have provided nearly 33 million battery swaps to users.

Nio has also this week welcomed two new major partners to its battery swap technology, Geely Holding and Changan Auto.

Earlier this year, the brand unveiled a new electric estate and an electric SUV that will form part of its European line-up.

The ET5 will rival the BMW i5 Touring and offers a range of 270 - 350 miles, depending on variant. The EL6 will go head-to-head with the Audi Q8 e-tron and can cover 300 miles between charges.

Nio also appointed Marc Samuel as its national fleet sales manager.
