[h=2]Australian FT: I become PR to buy HDB so as to avoid paying high rentals[/h]
by Kojak Bt on Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 5:35pm

The Straits Times recently published a news report ('More Australians Choosing to Move to Singapore', 28 Nov 2011 - http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_738845.html) boasting that Singapore has emerged as Australians' fastest-rising destination. There were 88,000 departures from Australia last year and Singapore overtook Hong Kong to become the 4th biggest destination for Australians. Over the past 3 years, there were about 20,000 Australians coming to Singapore to stay:
2008 5,431
2009 6,428
2010 6,952
Ten years ago, the figure was only 2,325.
Many Australians came for jobs and promotion opportunities which Singapore offers. The Straits Times highlighted one such Australian in its story - Peter Breitkreutz, a 45 year-old vice-president currently working in Citibank Singapore. He came to Singapore working as a global strategic sourcing manager at Motorola Singapore from 2007 to 2009 before hopping over to Citibank Singapore in 2010. His current job title is Vice President, Regional Business Operations and Services Category Sourcing Manager.
During the interview with Straits Times, he said that he has been living in Singapore for about 6 years and has no intentions of leaving Singapore. He lives here with his Shanghai-born wife and 2 sons who were both born in Singapore. He is a Singapore PR and has recently bought a HDB resale flat in Sengkang.
"We are in Singapore for the long run," he said. "We planted our roots... becoming a citizen has entered my mind. The only issue is that Singapore does not allow dual citizenship. I couldn't see myself giving up my Australian passport at this stage."
But he emphasized, "By becoming (permanent residents) and making that plunge, we have invested in an apartment, and do almost everything citizens can do. We have no real plans to move back to Australia."
Is this Australian foreign talent really as committed to Singapore as he has claimed by becoming a PR so that he could take the "plunge" to "invest" in a HDB resale flat for him and his family to "sink" roots here?
A cursory check online revealed that he had other reasons for "investing" in a HDB resale flat. This was what he said on his personal blog (www.aussiepete.com) in Jul 2008, published under the title "Foreigners Living In Singapore Want To Beat The 'Killer' Rental Market!" before he became a PR (http://www.aussiepete.com/2008/07/only-way-for-foreigner-living-in.html):
"We've been living in Singapore now for two years, and have watched the rental market spiral out of control. We currently rent a condo apartment in Woodsvale, and the monthly payment is absolutely exorbitant."
"Our plan is to apply for our permanent resident status over the next couple of months, which is academic as far as the approval. Once we have our PR and our current lease expires, we are eligible to purchase a resale HDB. Initial calculations indicate that by going down this avenue, show that we can purchase quite a large flat in a relatively 'opulent' zone, and we will still reduce our monthly expenditure on housing by almost a half. Unbelievable!!"
"It seems like we are not the only people doing this. Interestingly enough, the latest reports from local property agencies show that almost one in five HDB flats sold recently went to PRs... the number of apartments sold to permanent residents is a two-fold increase from a year ago."
In a way, Singaporeans can't really blame foreigners for wanting to exploit ways get a better life for themselves and their families. If we were them, we would do the same too. By buying a HDB resale, not only the monthly expenditure on housing is reduced, the foreigner stands to recoup all the money thrown into housing when the HDB resale is sold eventually prior to his leaving Singapore. With a bit of luck, he might even be able to make a little capital gain on selling the HDB resale flat. If the foreigner rents a flat, he will not be able to recoup any rentals when he leaves.
Hence, the question comes back to Government policy. Why did the Government decide to allow PRs to buy HDBs? In the past, young Singaporean couples who needed to find a HDB quickly so that they could get married or find a place close to their parents' could choose the HDB resale route. With the current high HDB resale prices pushed up by increasing demands from foreigners turned PRs, the HDB resale route is effectively out of reach for young Singaporean couples. They have to contend with buying new HDBs now. Hence, it's clear that the Government has failed to put the interest of Singaporeans first in this case.
On the question of commitment and sinking roots, Singaporeans have to endure 2 years of NS and sink in another 20 years of their lives in reservist trainings, all the time risking injuries and loss of limps. Are the foreigners willing to do that or willing to let their sons do that? How many will?
So, when this foreign vice-president of Citibank Singapore said they have planted roots in Singapore with no real plans to move back to Australia and by becoming PRs, they do almost everything citizens can do, would he be willing to send his 2 sons to serve NS like what Singaporeans do? Incidentally, in an online interview with an expat site, he mentioned that the only disadvantage (of being a PR) is that their son will be liable for NS (http://www.expatinterviews.com/singapore/peter-breitkreutz.html)...
* Thanks to Irene Ho for pointing out the article Breitkreutz wrote in his personal blog about the real reason for him becoming a PR.

Dirty politics is one of the key reasons for allowing P.Rs to buy into Government housing, One reason is to constantly use this P.Rs to add to the demand thus keeping hdb price expensive.. Years of over demand under supply has push up the price of Resale/New houses to ridicules levels, So now we have a very large no. of home-owners who bought houses at inflated price, causing this bubble.. Once the bubble pop.. Hooray we will have tens of thousands of people whose houses automatically loses value and i hope one of those fuckers would be this Aussie Vegemite Petemate.

all these fucking bad PAP policy on property investments for the 80% HDB dewellers. So 80% of aging Singaporeans are without investment properties to cover their retirement income needs and only depend on CPF ponzi scheme.

Now fuck PAP want FTs to invest in HBD properties. Get rid if PAP come GE2016.

Don't miss the big picture. The solution is not to ban PRs from buying HDB as this will only hurt HDB owners and not the ruling class who owns private property. It will also not solve the underlying issue. The real question is why were so many foreigners allowed to live and work in Sinkandpoor. It is the influx of foreigners that gave rise to many social problems. The foreigners were brought in as a solution to a problem but no one ever gave a thought about the myriad other problems it will create.

There's nothing wrong with this FT. Ruling party created all the policies with support from the 60%.

FT just exploiting the loop holes. If I am this FT, I will do the same. Unfortunately, no country except Sinkieland has such policies.

Amazing Sinkieland! Truly Sinkieland!

Something is wrong in this country.Something is just not right.I have asked a Myanmar PR engineer who is owner of a resale HDB flat why he don't become a Singapore Citizen. He laughed and said "What for ? Next time when I go back I sell at high price with good profit." The Myanmar PR engineer is very grateful to the PAP for giving him a job and a house in Singapore and will kissed the toes of the PAP without doubt.

http://www.aussiepete.com/2011/12/we-love-singapore-for-record.html

I am very saddened that I have no option but to pen a response to the increasing number of blog entries and forum posts popping up all over the place online in the last few days.

I wouldn’t like to suggest that some people seem to have too much time on their hands, but why someone feels it is important enough to research my blog and other articles to try and discredit me or my motivations for living in Singapore or becoming PR is totally beyond me.

Anyway, to set the record straight, I wanted to put forward my position on a few items and just move on (I’m not interested in getting into flame wars with online trolls).

DECISION TO BECOME PERMANENT RESIDENT

Regardless of the quotes taken out of context from an article written on my blog some 3-years+ ago, our decision for becoming PR was not for the sole intention of buying a resale HDB flat. We have become PRs because we love Singapore, it is our home, and we had made a ‘pact’ even prior to relocating here many years ago that if we were to really integrate into the local community, we wanted to do it ‘boots and all’ – moving to a foreign country is no menial task – it takes much courage and planning. Our first attempt to achieve this, was by moving to Woodlands (as opposed to doing the stereotypical expat thing and surrounding ourselves with other foreigners).

When I penned the article all those years ago about beating the increasing rental market by purchasing a property here, I was highlighting the fact that rent money is ‘dead money’ and to invest in ourselves as opposed to lining our landlord’s pocket was an easy decision – this would be applicable no matter which country we were living.

Living in a condo was just not doing it for us – we still felt like we were on an extended business trip and did not feel at home… almost like we were shutting ourselves in, so we decided to go down the HDB resale flat path, as this gave us the opportunity to meet more locals and to potentially give back to the community in which we so dearly wanted to integrate.

This has worked for us – our best friends are our neighbours. We gladly and proudly actively participate in the community, and I am extremely active in the local grassroots in Sengkang West – spending most weekends and many weeknights on such activities.

We have no secrets or ulterior motives. Singapore is our home and we are proud and feel very blessed that we have been so welcomed into our neighbourhood and community! I make absolutely no apologies for this.

In no way have we mocked any system as a few people seem to be insinuating in these forums.

NATIONAL SERVICE FOR OUR BOYS

Another issue that seems to be a topic for these forum trolls, is around a comment I made in an interview (also more than 3 years ago). I suggested at the time, that I felt it a disadvantage of becoming a PR that our boys (both born here) would be liable for National Service.

On this issue, through my local mates and close friends, I have come to learn more about the process and what NS entails. These days, I do not actually feel it is a disadvantage. I have grown to believe that along with our children playing their part in their birth-country’s obligations, NS has shown to instill a discipline and sense of pride that would be difficult to attain through other means. I am therefore supportive of this requirement for male children of permanent residents.

CITIZENSHIP

The colour of my passport seems to be a giant bug-bear for a small cross-section of people. In a recent interview with the Straits Times, I stated that although I had thought about SG citizenship, ‘at this juncture’ I was not ready to give up my Aussie passport (while there is no opportunity for dual citizenship).

This has lead to much speculation as to my motivation and reasoning. Quite frankly, this is a very personal decision and not one to be taken lightly – in my culture, to give up one’s citizenship is akin to turning one’s back on their heritage and even their family. Just as I respect and totally accept other cultures around me, I would have hoped that my culture and upbringing would at least be tolerated.

This is my reasoning and it has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not I one day intend to return to Australia (which is not even in our thoughts right now), nor is it so that I could rort or mock any system or process.

MY INCOME

I have worked very hard to become successful in my career (over decades). This has been at the sacrifice of my personal leisure and my family time. Along with long, hard hours, I spend much time volunteering in the community. How much I earn as a result of my professional endeavours is absolutely nobody’s business and has no bearing on my love for Singapore or our decision to live in a HDB estate.

Thanks for reading – I hope this clears the air somewhat.

It is important to note, that we LOVE our home – Singapore! We are happy and blessed to be here and we will continue to integrate and assist others to integrate into the local community. We have no other *intention right now, but to remain here, and perhaps one day (as the years move forward) we will take the next step towards Singapore citizenship. In the meantime, please accept our good intentions and respect our wish to be good neighbours and friends.

Cheers,*

Pete

No, I am not acquainted with him, but just feel that he's trying to adapt and yet internet trolls slam him despite his best efforts.

But any hint that he is in the same bed with PAP, I would gladly help feed the trolls and add fuel for the flamers.

Everyone got the right to move anywhere to look for a better future. FTs coming to Sinkieland and Sinkees becoming FT elsewhere.

However, ruling party do make things much easier for FTs to come to Sinkieland.

Grassroots connections are useful in helping FTs get a foot into the local system. For now, I'd say it is a more pragmatic reason for him to be part of them.

But let us know when he starts to wax lyrical about PAP dogs or starts posting pictures all smiles with a PAP scum.

Surely he will then suffer.
