Myanmar is to obtain six Sukhoi Su-30 fighters under a deal signed during a visit by Russia's defence minister to the Southeast Asian nation.

A report by Russia's TASS news agency quotes deputy defence minister Lt. Gen. Alexander Fomin as saying that the aircraft will be the main fighter aircraft of the Myanmar air force.

FlightGlobal's World Air Force's directory for 2018 shows that the mainstay of Myanmar's combat fleet are 39 Mikoyan MiG-29 aircraft. The country is also shown as having orders for 16 Chengdu/Pakistan Aeronautical Complex JF-17 fighters.

Older aircraft in its fleet are of Chinese origin, and include 21 Shenyang A-5s, 24 Chengdu F-7s, and a single Shenyang J-6.

The Myanmar air force is an interesting creature. It operates on paper a lot of aircraft from different sources and it buys from w variety of suppliers. But what is on paper and what they can put in the air is 2 different things. I would suspect that pretty much all their Mig-29s and definitely their F-7 and A-5 have low serviceability. But they are innovative in terms of doing things like upgrading their Chinese Shenyang F-7 (Mig-21 copies) with Israeli electronics and radar. The Chinese unfortunately have an even wor
