SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Singapore must find workable solutions to keep its society vibrant and forward-looking, maintain its economic vitality and strengthen the Singapore core, as it faces the challenge of population growth.

In his 2012 New Year message on Saturday, Mr Lee described population as a "particularly complex and critical challenge".

Mr Lee said the country needs to balance the conflicting factors, make judicious compromises and accept the unavoidable trade-offs.

He highlighted the conflicting factors that have to be considered:

Singaporeans need to have enough children to replace themselves, yet getting married and having children are ultimately personal decisions.

A vibrant economy needs enough workers and talent, yet it runs into physical and social constraints if it admits too many foreign workers too quickly.

Diversity enriches society, provided the new arrivals adopt Singapore's values and culture.

Mr Lee said the government is tightening the inflow of foreign workers to a more sustainable rate but companies are already feeling the pinch, especially small and medium enterprises.

He said individual Singaporeans will feel it too because many foreign workers do jobs that serve citizens.

Mr Lee said admitting fewer foreign workers also means forgoing business opportunities and accepting slower growth.

He said the government must do its utmost to raise productivity, to make up in quality what it will miss in quantity.

The prime minister said these population issues affect all Singaporeans, and will be discussed over the next year to understand better what's at stake and what choices have to be made as a nation.

Mr Lee said how Singaporeans manage the difficult trade-offs, like the population issue, reflects the strength of the community.

He said as the nation matures, its society is increasingly diverse and the public debate has become more open and robust.

Mr Lee said just as important is how well its people relate to one another in a shared home - not only in good times when there are fewer frictions and it is easier to get along, but also when they encounter tough issues and when passions run high and different points of view have to be bridged.

With all due respect... fuck your GDP and fuck your economic growth.

Despite all your years of economic growth, why are many born and bred old Singaporeans living like dogs, scavenging for cans, cardboard and scrap?

Maybe, just maybe, if you didn't buy that submarine or frigate in order to keep up with the 'operational readiness' prick-waving contest, you would have more than enough to help the underprivileged.

Let us not live as sardines. Cut that national population density now.

oh no! this means he is going to import more FTrash!!

the high art and culture of whining and complaining with seeming anonymity behind the keyboard have taken to new heights. they are truly unassailable traits of an advanced culture.

If LKY aka PAP did not force the 'zero population growth' in the 60s on its citizens , Singapore would not be facing such predicament now!He made the society believe that we cannot afford to have a big population then, made it more difficult to have more than 2 children by his policies, raised cost of living beyond productivity levels etc..It goes to show he knew nothing about managing a country of people. He governed the country by fear and punitive actions for any difference of opinion. He practised nepotism to hang on to power and rewarded all those who supported him and his policies. In short he practised the age old machevelian principles of government. He still 'stand corrected' for all his wrong policies!
The result is the damage done to society and the lack of confidence created in its citizens to think beyond what the PAP has been brainwashing all these years!
Now his son is trying to repair some of the damage done by his father in his quick fix solution of mass importing immigrants. He is so hung up on the GDP numbers , he forgot he is dealing with people of his country and not solving a mathematical quiz.

There is no identity now when he mass imports the population. For now the Singapore identity is lost forever and perhaps a new identity will emerge in 50 years from now if the new immigrants decides to stay put even in hard times.Even then, an identity will only emerge based on economic and wealth status rather than a bonding of races that went through the sufferings of life in the 60s.

LHL can do better by not focusing on GDP numbers and work to bring the confidence back in his people. Stop the mass immigration policies but selective policies and make Singapore a place to call home for everyone and their children. Abolish the compulsary NS as it puts its citizens at a disadvantage with the foreign migrants.Make it a professional army.Encourage those Singaporeans or ex Singaporeans who has left the country to remain connected and create an extended arm.Diversity in experience and thoughts creates a more vibrant society!
